The uncle had lost a leg to infection, and Anne speculates that he could have been pinned and fatally pecked in a breeding-season battle that a fully fit bird would have escaped. ?It?s sensational for Ithaca bird gossip, she says, since this would be the first crow murder that even Kevin had noted.
Deaths do occasionally shake up the territories and family arrangements, though. Down and around some residential streets, Anne points out the crows of another notorious family, quietly pecking near trees on a tidy lawn. This territory once hosted the thriving family of a long-established breeding pair. The old female died, and the old male eventually replaced her with a young female that one of his sons had been courting. Now life isn?t going so well: The young female doesn?t seem that closely bonded with the father of her former suitor, Anne says. When the old male lowers his head in a gesture inviting her to preen his feathers as any good mate would, she ignores him.
Anne is observing most of this and the activity of other crow families from the driver?s seat of her car. If she is driving along and notices something intriguing, she pulls to a stop and lifts her spotting scope from the backseat where the superb instrument rides in what looks like a round, padded dog bed. It?s unnaturally unhairy, because it?s not a dog bed but a scope bed.
Staying in the car helps in not spooking the crows she is keeping such close track of. These urban birds are wary of people and of novelty. But the birds do have their ways. Anne describes setting out food in one of those scary novelties: a small box of clear plastic.. Crows watched the box but didn?t approach. Squirrels ventured in, snatched the food, dashed a short distance and cached their prizes. When the squirrels set off to search again, the crows flew to the cache and retrieved the food, success without having to get close to a new object.
Behaviors like these make designing crow experiments especially tricky. Jenn says she has been warned that crows are too smart to study.
As daylight wanes, Anne, Jenn and Kevin meet up at a great crow-watching spot: Cornell?s composting facility, where long, parallel ridges of food scraps and other waste attract dozens of crows. There, working the faces of the compost piles is AP. He has lost his territory to another male, a calamity that explains why he is foraging in the free-for-all compost paradise too big for any single crow to monopolize. The good news, though, is AP is still hanging on.

Radiation therapy, also known as radiotherapy, involves usage of high-energy rays to destroy cells of the tumor. This prevents tumors from growing and multiplying.
1. Individuals who cannot undergo surgery are prescribed radiation therapy. In some cases, it may be used after surgery to destroy tumor cells.2. Radiation therapy is local in nature, which means that only targeted cells are affected. Other brain and body cells are not affected.

Student Loan Payments - Personal Finance for Teachers
This post is about finding relief/help if you fall behind with your student loan payments or just cannot afford to pay them. There is more help available when you have federal based student loans such as Stafford and Grad PLUS loans; and that is the primary focus of this post.
For years, taking out student loans to fund your college education was a great idea and almost a ?no-brainer?. After all, when you graduated, it was almost a guarantee that you would find a position that would pay enough so that you can timely make your student loan payments. That is not a guarantee now ? you might not find a job at all. Or, you might find one that does not pay as much as you were expecting.
So what can you do when you have trouble paying or cannot make your student loan payments? The good news is there are many options available to you if you find yourself in this position.
When I graduated, I had a rather small amount of student loans that I thought were no big deal. I would make extra student loan payments from the wonderful and high-paying job that I found after graduation. That did not happen. When I graduated, the job market was terrible for Finance graduates. I finally found a job making a whole lot less than I planned. I could not really afford to make my student loan payments. The only relief that I could find was a forbearance. Which basically means that I did not have to make payments for a certain period of time and when the period of time was over, the slate would be clean ? the loans no longer showed past due balances. This remedy is still available, however there are several more depending on where your loan came from.
Government Based Loans
These are loans such as the Stafford and Grad PLUS loans which are programs set up by the federal government. If you do not know what kind of loan that you have, you can go to the National Student Loan Data System. Here you can find information about all of your federal student loans.
Now that you have found out which kind of loans you have, here are the tools available to you to get your student loans back on track:
- ?Forbearance (sometimes called a deferment) ? With federal based student loans your loans can be in forbearance for up to five years in 1 year increments. This will essentially let you stop making payments on your loan for the period of the forbearance. When the forbearance is over, your slate will be wiped clean with the lender ? you will no longer be in default. The interest on your loan will accrue while under forbearance and it will be added to the principal of the loan. The forbearance should be used if your situation is short-term in nature.
- ? Rehabilitate the loan ? Rehabilitating the loan will require speaking to and negotiating with your lender. The terms of a rehabilitation are basically that you and your lender come to terms on a reasonable and affordable payments. You will then make those payments nine times over a ten month period. Once the payments have been made to satisfy the rehabilitation, the default is removed from your records. If you have problems coming to terms with your lender about what is reasonable and affordable, there is help. You can call the Federal Student Aid Ombudsman at 877-557-2575 and ask for their help.
- ? Consolidate your loans ? This is done primarily through the Federal Direct Loan program. This program lets you enter into a payment plan that is based on your income. However, the record of the default stays on your credit report for 7 years.
- Bankruptcy ? If your financial position is such that you are going to file bankruptcy, student loans as a general rule are not included in the debts that get discharged. However, there are certain circumstances where the student loans can be discharged. You will have to talk to your bankruptcy attorney for the specifics.
- ? Death or Disability ? Depending on the circumstances such as death or total disability your loans are eligible to be canceled. To find out the specifics go to www.studentloanborrowersassistance.org.
As you can see from above, communication is key. If you begin to have problems paying your student loans (or any debt for that matter) make sure you talk to the lender and make them aware of the situation and ask if there is anything that you can work out to help resolve the problem.

For a business, the biggest problem when it comes to security holes is the amount of money that it can cost you. While normal people have to worry about the loss of privacy and the violation that they feel, businesses care more about the bottom dollar. And that is what they should be concerned about. They are in business to both make money and provide quality service to their customers. If they are not able to do that because of some security hole then that business is looked at with a negative tint.

This is why you must train the people who work for you how they can and cannot use social media on company time. Some companies just ban the sites altogether. Others will let their employees on the sites while at work but only if they follow a strict set of rules. You also want to make sure that even when they are at home that they are careful in what they talk about.
If you think that all security holes are purely technical then you would be wrong. Simple social networking services can be just as bad.

BOYKINS?The Boykins Town Council during a recent meeting voted unanimously to use the same agency collecting delinquent property taxes to collect back real estate taxes.
Since starting the collection of personal property in July using Virginia Auction co., which seizes vehicles of those who owe the tax, $2,148 has been collected, said Mayor Spier Edwards. of that, $1,317 was collected from vehicles that were booted or seized and $831 came in voluntarily from others who heard about it. The tax is levied annually on vehicles, trailers and motorcycles.
Before the seizing began, $7,306 was owed in personal property taxes and $3,925 in real estate taxes, Edwards said. some $1,600 has been paid in real estate taxes.
Now Virginia Auction co. will go after the remaining $2,345.
Communities using Virginia Auction get delinquent tax lists. using license-plate readers equipped with the treasurers? information, Virginia Auction employees scan cars? license plates in parking lots, driveways and streets.
Once the reader locates a license plate matching a delinquent account, the agent boots the car. a note is left for the owner to call the treasurer?s office to settle the tax account.
If payment is made before the close of business that day, the vehicle is not towed; the only cost is $30 to have the boot removed and a 20 percent collection fee.
If the treasurer?s office is closed, the vehicle will be towed. The towing fee is $200.

Evacuation of foreigners planned from Tripoli (Reuters)
BENGHAZI, Libya (Reuters) ? An international body said on Friday it would mount an operation, probably by sea, to evacuate thousands of foreigners trapped in Tripoli by rebel advances that have put Muammar Gaddafi's capital under siege.
The rebels, who have transformed the battlefield this week with victories taking them ever closer to the city, launched an assault east of the capital but were taking heavy casualties, a Reuters reporter at the front line said.
Rebel advances west and south of Tripoli in recent days have cut the road links between the capital and the outside world and severed the supply lines of Gaddafi's forces, putting his 41-year-old rule under unprecedented pressure.
In a sign of fighting hitting closer to Gaddafi's inner circle, the brother of the spokesman who has served as the leader's public face was reported killed.
A Reuters reporter said rebels had launched an assault on Gaddafi's forces in Zlitan, east of the capital, where fighting has been bloodier and advances far slower than in the west. A large number of wounded were being brought to the rebels' field hospital.
The rebels suffered a setback on Thursday when Gaddafi's forces crushed an uprising inside Zlitan.
A spokeswoman for the International Organization for Migration (IOM), Jemini Pandya, said an operation to evacuate thousands of Egyptians and other foreigners trapped in Tripoli by the latest fighting would begin within days.
"We are looking at all options available, but it will probably have to be by sea," she told a Geneva news conference. More than 600,000 of an estimated 1.5 million to 2.5 million foreigners, most of whom are Asian and African migrant workers, have fled six months of fighting in Libya. However, many have remained in Tripoli, which until this week was far from fighting and a safe two-hour drive from the Tunisian border.
SPOKESMAN'S BROTHER KILLED
Moussa Ibrahim, the spokesman whose briefings and interviews have been broadcast worldwide throughout the six-month-old uprising, has served as the highest-profile face of Gaddafi's government.
His brother, a 25-year-old student named Hasan Ali, was killed by a NATO helicopter gunship in the central square of Zawiyah after going there with a group of others to check on friends, a Libyan official said.
"We are surprised by this and we condemn it. NATO planes have become a way of killing civilians and providing air cover for rebels to advance on Libyan cities," he said.
Zawiyah, west of the capital, fell to the rebels his week, transforming the long-stalemated conflict by blocking the road linking Tripoli to the Tunisian border.
Ibrahim, who has repeatedly denied reports of rebel advances, said on state television on Thursday: "We reassure people that we are making progress on all fronts." According to the JANA news agency, he promised all Libyans payments of 500 dinars, about $300, as reward for being steadfast.
REBEL GAINS
West of Tripoli on Thursday, some 200 rebel fighters fired guns in the air to celebrate the capture of Sabratha, next to Zawiyah. Fighters said they controlled 90 percent of the ancient Roman town, a UNESCO World Heritage site. That extends their blockade of the coastal highway to Tripoli.
South of Tripoli, they also control Garyan, which straddles the main route to the capital from the south. A Reuters reporter there said it was largely quiet on Friday. Hospital officials said one rebel had died and three were seriously hurt the previous day in clashes with Gaddafi troops west of the town.
East of the capital, the rebels have failed to match their breakthroughs to the west.
Four people were killed and five badly wounded in Zlitan when Gaddafi's troops attacked rebels who aimed to stage a revolt to coincide with a push from rebel-held Misrata, an anti-government activist called Mohammed told Reuters by telephone from the town.
"There are still bodies in the streets. The situation is very difficult. It was a preemptive attack by Gaddafi's forces," he said.
Despite denials, the rebels and Gaddafi loyalists have held negotiations this week. Former French premier Dominique de Villepin told the daily Le Parisien he had attended "extremely difficult" talks with both on Monday in a Tunisian resort.
"I was indeed there, but I cannot make any further comment because it would compromise the chances of success," he added.
Libyan Prime Minister Al-Baghdadi Ali Al-Mahmoudi declined to comment on any talks other than to say the government had been in contact with all sides.
"You will hear in the next few days good news that will make you happy if you are for peace," he said.
