Cantaloupe illnesses and deaths expected to rise (AP)

WASHINGTON ? Federal health officials said Wednesday more illnesses and possibly more deaths may be linked to an outbreak of listeria in cantaloupe in coming weeks.

So far, the outbreak has caused at least 72 illnesses ? including up to 16 deaths ? in 18 states, making it the deadliest food outbreak in the United States in more than a decade.

The heads of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Food and Drug Administration said consumers who have cantaloupes produced by Jensen Farms in Colorado should throw them out. If they are not sure where the fruit is from, they shouldn't eat it.

Neither the government nor Jensen Farms has supplied a list of retailers who may have sold the fruit. Officials say consumers should ask retailers about the origins of their cantaloupe. If they still aren't sure, they should get rid of it.

"If it's not Jensen Farms, it's OK to eat," said Thomas Frieden, director of the CDC. "But if you can't confirm it's not Jensen Farms, then it's best to throw it out."

Jensen Farms of Holly, Colo. says it shipped cantaloupes to 25 states, though the FDA has said it may be more, and illnesses have been discovered in several states that were not on the shipping list. A spokeswoman for Jensen Farms said the company's product is often sold and resold, so they do not always know where it went.

The recalled cantaloupes may be labeled "Colorado Grown," `'Distributed by Frontera Produce," `'Jensenfarms.com" or "Sweet Rocky Fords." Not all of the recalled cantaloupes are labeled with a sticker, the FDA said. The company said it shipped out more than 300,000 cases of cantaloupes that contained five to 15 melons, meaning the recall involved 1.5 million to 4.5 million pieces of fruit.

The FDA said none of the cantaloupes had been exported, reversing an earlier statement that some of the tainted melons had been shipped abroad.

Frieden and FDA Commissioner Margaret Hamburg said that illnesses are expected for weeks to come because the incubation period for listeria can be a month or even longer. That means that someone who ate contaminated cantaloupe last week may not get sick until next month. Jensen Farms last shipped cantaloupes on Sept. 10. The shelf life is about two weeks.

"We will see more cases likely through October," Hamburg said.

The Food and Drug Administration said state health officials found listeria in cantaloupes taken from Colorado grocery stores and from a victim's home that were grown at Jensen Farms. Matching strains of the disease were found on equipment and cantaloupe samples at Jensen Farms' packing facility in Granada, Colo.

Sherri McGarry, a senior adviser in the FDA's Office of Foods, said the agency is looking at the farm's water supply and possible animal intrusions among other things in trying to figure out how the cantaloupes became contaminated. Listeria bacteria grow in moist, muddy conditions and are often carried by animals.

The health officials said this is the first known outbreak of listeria in cantaloupe. Listeria is generally found in processed meats and unpasteurized milk and cheese, though there have been a growing number of outbreaks in produce. Hamburg called the outbreak a "surprise" and said the agencies are studying it closely to find out how it happened.

Cantaloupe is often the source of outbreaks, however. Frieden said CDC had identified 10 other cantaloupe outbreaks in the last decade, most of them from salmonella.

Listeria is more deadly than well-known pathogens like salmonella and E. coli, though those outbreaks generally cause many more illnesses. Twenty-one people died in an outbreak of listeria poisoning in 1998 traced to contaminated hot dogs and possibly deli meats made by Bil Mar Foods, a subsidiary of Sara Lee Corp. Another large listeria outbreak, in 1985, killed 52 people and was linked to Mexican-style soft cheese.

Listeria generally only sickens the elderly, pregnant women and others with compromised immune systems. The CDC said the median age of those sickened is 78 and that 1 in 5 who contract the disease can die from it. Symptoms include fever and muscle aches, often with other gastrointestinal symptoms.

Unlike many pathogens, listeria bacteria can grow at room temperatures and even refrigerator temperatures. It is hardy and can linger long after the source of the contamination is gone ? health officials say people who may have had the contaminated fruit in their kitchens should clean and sanitize any surfaces it may have touched.

The CDC said Tuesday that 13 deaths are linked to the tainted fruit. State and local officials say they are investigating three additional deaths that may be connected.

The death toll released by the CDC Tuesday surpassed the number of deaths linked to an outbreak of salmonella in peanuts almost three years ago. Nine people died in that outbreak. The CDC reported four deaths in New Mexico, two deaths each in Colorado and Texas and one death each in Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, Oklahoma and Maryland.

New Mexico officials said Tuesday they are investigating a fifth death, while health authorities in Kansas and Wyoming said they too are investigating additional deaths possibly linked to the tainted fruit.

The CDC reported the 72 illnesses and deaths in 18 states. Cases of listeria were reported in California, Colorado, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Maryland, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Texas, Virginia, West Virginia, Wisconsin, and Wyoming. The most illnesses were reported in Colorado, which has seen 15 sickened. Fourteen illnesses were reported in Texas, 10 in New Mexico and eight in Oklahoma.

While most healthy adults can consume listeria with no ill effects, it can kill the elderly and those with compromised immune systems. It is also dangerous to pregnant women because it easily passes through to the fetus. The CDC's Frieden said that two of those sickened were pregnant women but they have since recovered.

How to Make a Perfect grilled chicken

This article has been viewed 5 times.

Cooking is usually a pleasurable, spouse and children pastime throughout weekends. Shell out a person?s laid back afternoons with your backyard, and also get people chefs for just a grilled chicken for your evening meal.

Finding out how to bbq just isn?t as tricky when you could see in the media. You only need the best temperatures for your griller particularly if you are utilizing an electrical bbq grill. Nevertheless, chance . conventional griller, search for quite a few dry out wooden or even grilling with charcoal. Ignite your hot coals or maybe timber by putting draped up papers beneath each and every fossil fuel and then arranged the forms unstoppable. Will not dump fuel to the coals and also dried solid wood. The smoke cigarettes coming from the hot coals gives your gasoline-like smell on your smoked various meats. These are typically your best guns with barbecuing.

Select the best area of the chicken. Which i work with hen lower limbs plus legs considering they are the particular fattiest aspects of your fowl. These kind of parts may produce your succulent, barbecued poultry. Though these could audio bad, the flavor can be quite delicious. Many would certainly nonetheless have a preference for barbecuing chicken breasts while using cases with.

Prior to starting barbecuing your chicken, do remember to help marinate them at the very least in a single day. Of course, overnight. It is because the more an individual hot sauce recipe the steak, better compression involving flavor develops. I like to use store-bought marinades because they spend less a great deal groundwork time in your kitchen. The negative effects of most ready-made marinades is their excessive sea salt content. But when you have time period, you can create your individual hot sauce recipe completely from scratch. Inside the recipke underneath, the hot sauce recipe along with the chicken breast ended up simmered in concert to hurry on the means of grilling and also to enable the types get married in concert. I similar to Asian-style marinades like that:
For every kilo connected with chicken breast:
? pot mild soy products sauce (for sale in a Hard anodized cookware component of food markets)
2-3 tbsps . with fresh crammed lime or lemon drink
Five tablespoons brown lightly sugars

One moderate stalk regarding of lemon type grass (pounded)
Three cloves killed beans
A single teaspoon sesame acrylic (discretionary)

Combine every one of the earlier mentioned components in a serious container plus let it skin boil for two main a few minutes. Include a fowl plus simmer for someone else a few minutes. Depletion the actual rooster in the colander and reserve a marinade for basting while in grilling. Basting is important so that the chicken won?t dehydrate. Your marinade can be built for a spices by developing a rudimentary roux. Accusation in court made by placing a tbsp with butter on the non-stick pan along with let it make pertaining to units. Dump above the marinade along with take till the hot sauce recipe thickens. Preference the particular spices and change this spices consequently.

You can also choose to create a dried out, caress marinade. The following dry apply consists of seasonings along with a small essential oil. For fowl, dry out or maybe refreshing tarragon and rosemary integrates together perfectly. If you need a spicier, grilled chicken, convey a pinch associated with chili dust and also capsicum pepper. You will discover unlimited marinades to get grilled chicken. Just a little creative imagination and creative imagination are the secrets. Ensure that while barbecuing a hen, certainly not permit the flare appear. This will bring about used up fowl. This doesn?t attractiveness both to your little brown eyes also to this taste. If this arises, mix a bit normal water in the relationship. Some also like their particular chefs to become protected in the barbecuing course of action.

Professionally, When i loved mine exposed. There is certainly merely a little something in regards to the smoking and that is, in my opinion, the particular fact of grilling. Smoked ingredients are best supported heated, next to the bbq grill with preparing salads and other greens that you picked.

Health News - Early use of non-parental childcare is not harmful for ...

What type of childcare arrangements do parents choose before their children are 18 months old?

Most pre-school children in Norway attend different types of childcare arrangements on a daily or weekly basis, and by far the majority are in centre-based childcare (kindergarten). In contrast to most other countries, children with physical and/or mental disabilities are not separated from the other children, but attend regular groups or classes in public kindergartens and schools.

Childcare is an important arena for language development and learning and for preventing and coping with mental health issues, regardless of the child's functional level. Because most children in Norway participate in childcare we have opportunities to learn about what the best arrangements are for learning, as well as how best to cope with daily challenges for children with different levels of functioning. The significance of different types of childcare for children's development is frequently discussed in many research groups as well as in the preschool education sector.

The aim of this report ?Barnepass fram til 18 m?neder. Sammenhenger mellom barnepass fram til 18 m?neder og spr?klige ferdigheter og psykisk fungering ved fem ?r? (English: Childcare up to 18 months. Relations between child care up to 18 months and language skills and mental function at five years) has been to provide more knowledge about the use of different childcare arrangements and how they affect children's functioning as well as the impact of starting in childcare at an early age.

The report provides an overview of the current status and is based on data from the Norwegian Mother and Child Cohort Study (MoBa) at the Norwegian Institute of Public Health. Part one of the report presents information about childcare arrangements based on questionnaire data from more than 60 000 children in MoBa aged 18 months, in the period between 2001 and the end of 2009. Then impact of childcare (up to 18 months of age) was studied in the context of language skills, language-related difficulties and psychological function in 13 000 children who had reached five years by the end of 2010.

What works for whom?

Overall, the report shows that neither the language skills nor the psychological function of most children varies with the type of childcare, their age when starting in childcare outside the home, whether they used a combination of childcare arrangements or just one type, or how many hours per week they were in childcare.

?For most children there is no evidence from our findings to suggest that it is harmful to begin in centre-based childcare at 12 months,? said Synnve Schj?lberg, researcher and specialist in clinical psychology. ?The small effect sizes of the findings indicate that the differences between children attending childcare at an early age and those starting later have no clinical implications for most children? she explains.

?Neither do the findings suggest that most children who are cared for at home up to 18 months of age are better prepared than children cared for by others in the same period,? said Schj?lberg.

?It is possible that the small differences found could be attributed to some children?s particular vulnerability. Low quality childcare could be hypothesised as another explanation,? said Schj?lberg. ?We will investigate these relationships further. The debate around centre-based childcare needs to be more nuanced and now rather focus on what works for whom? she added.

Main findings

The report is only available in Norwegian but here is a summary of the main findings: ?

  1. The majority of children cared for outside the home before they are 18 months were in centre-based childcare. A larger proportion of children were in non-maternal care outside the home in 2009 relative to previous years. Although most children are cared for at home until they are 10-12 months old, with increasing age there is an increase in the number of children who are cared for outside of their home.
Across year of data collection, and thus coverage of child-care centres, we found that 40 per cent of 18 month old children attended centre based childcare, while one in four children (26 per cent) are with a nanny/family-based care. In 2008 and 2009 we found that 59 per cent of the children attended centre-based childcare at 18 months, while 15 per cent were with a nanny/family-based care.?
  2. The number of hours children are in child care outside the home at 18 months increases. In the interval between 2001 and 2009, most of the 18 month old children (63 per cent) were in childcare between 25 to 40 hours per week. The average number of hours children were cared for by others increased from 27 hours for children who were 18 months old between 2001 and 2003 to 31 hours for children who were 18 months old between 2007 and 2009.?
  3. Approximately half of five year olds attend public childcare centres. 98 per cent of the five year olds participating in MoBa attend centre-based childcare. Approximately half of the children (52 per cent) attend public childcare centres while a slightly smaller proportion (45 per cent) attends privately run childcare centres.
  4. Choice of childcare is related to the length of mothers? education. A smaller proportion of 18-month-old children were cared for at home in 2009 relative to 2003. The most substantial change across time was found among mothers without any completed higher education. In 2003, 40 per cent of mothers with low levels of education utilised non-maternal care outside home, whereas this number had increased to 63 per cent in 2009. Relative to mothers with higher education, a larger proportion of mothers with lower education levels care for their children at home until 18 months (50 per cent vs. 14 per cent). Child-minder / family-based childcare were found to be more often used by mothers who did not have higher education.?
  5. Children of parents with a non-Norwegian mother tongue begin care outside the home later than children of two Norwegian speaking parents. At 18 months of age, 74 per cent of the children with two Norwegian speaking parents were cared for outside the home whereas 65 per cent of children from families where neither parent has Norwegian as their mother tongue were cared for outside the home.?
  6. Girls who attend child care outside the home from 12 months are not negatively affected in language development or language related problems. The same holds true for girls being cared for in different types of child care. There are no advantages in the girls? language development to being cared for at home in the first 18 months compared to being in childcare at an earlier age.?
  7. Boys who attend child care outside the home are rated as having slightly higher score on language related difficulties at five years relative to those who were cared for at home until 18 months. The effect size is small. Being cared for in childcare before 18 months only explains about one per mille (?) of the variation in language-related difficulties at five years. Thus, the difference between the two groups is not of clinical significance for most of the boys.?
  8. Boys who began in childcare outside the home before 18 months are rated with slightly higher scores on behavioural symptoms at five years relative to those who were cared for at home until 18 months. The effect sizes are small. Childcare experience only explains about one per mille (?) of the variation in behavioural symptoms and is thus not likely to be of clinical significance.?
  9. Children who are cared for more than 40 hours a week outside the home are rated with slightly more behavioural symptoms at five years of age. Both girls and boys who were cared for outside the home for 40 hours or more per week at 18 months were found to have slightly more behavioural problems at five years of age relative to children who were cared for less than 40 hours per week outside the home at 18 months. The effect sizes are small. The difference in childcare experience only explains about 1.2 per mille (?) of the variation in behavioural symptoms and thus for most of the children is not of clinical significance.?
  10. There is no association between childcare history and emotional problems at five years. Independent of the age when children start with care outside the home, neither girls nor boys who were cared for by others were found to be more anxious or sad than those who are cared for at home.?
  11. Many children have documented developmental difficulties or increased risk for developing such difficulties already during the first year of life. When the children reached five years of age, it is reported that five per cent had birth defects, syndromes or have had serious medical problems. It is also reported about seven per cent were at risk of developmental difficulties due to birth related factors(1). In addition, the parents of a third of all five year olds reported either having been concerned about the child?s development at some point or that the child had been diagnosed with a developmental disability by a healthcare professional.

It is important to stress that all significant differences that were identified were very small. This implies that the reported effects of childcare history are not likely to be of any clinical importance. The small differences between the groups could potentially be due to a small number of children being particularly sensitive to the time at which they start care outside the home or for the amount of time they spend away from home. Qualitative differences across the types of childcare institutions may also potentially influence these outcomes. However, these mechanisms will be explored further in future publications.

(1) Low birth weight, low gestational age, low Apgar score 5 minutes after birth.

Home Improvement Projects to savor | LibPress.com

Home improvement projects offer a great way to add value to your home. This applies especially if you?re adding a new addition or doing some landscaping. Maintenance work like fixing a leaky roof can also add to the value of your home. If you don?t have any emergencies to see to, you can take on smaller projects. You can find plenty of low cost projects to do so you can work within any budget. Let?s talk about a few pointers that you may need for your next home improvement project.

Once you decide to paint, do the job yourself or hire someone to do it for you. Home interior painting can get pretty tricky so there are many things you need to consider. Factors like how warm it is, how cold it is, and the type of aeration within your home must be considered.

All of these factors play a role in helping you determine the type of paint you need to purchase. Whether you choose non-toxic paint, or environmentally safe paint, it must conform to your situation and location. Children and pets can also play a role in helping you choose the proper paint for your home. While that kind of paint is more expensive, the benefits far outweigh the costs in our minds.

If you have ever had a beautiful green lawn, you know how much time and energy it takes to maintain. Lawns can actually be very high maintenance, especially when you have to take into account the pH levels and chemistry of the soil. Another problem that will show up are pests that must be eradicated. Lawn care centers both online and off-line can help educate you on how to properly take care of your lawn. The place that you live, no matter what elevation or climate zone, has a recommended lawn care strategy you can follow. If you need to utilize a little grass seed on your lawn, consult an expert as to when the best time would be. A good idea is to find out when you should plant the seed and not guess in order to see positive results.

Investing some time and money into your bathroom can add value to your home very easily. So, in that case, many people do not go too overboard with bathrooms. There are a few people that actually will bite the bullet and spend the cash.

People that like to be warm will install a baseboard heater for shower and bath times. Many people have a fetish for glamorous and large sinks with vanities. You will more than likely be very picky with this particular room because it is more personal and private. Just make sure that all of your pipes are well fitted and that water does not leak onto the floor ruining your tiles.

These two rooms, the kitchen and the bathroom, are very popular for remodels. If you?re looking to sell your house, make sure you do the kitchen because this is a very popular room to display when selling.

Arkansas insurance commissioner seeks exchange support

Arkansas? top insurance official is asking lawmakers to support the state?s application for a nearly $3.8 million dollar grant to begin planning for a key part of the federal health care overhaul.

Arkansas Insurance Commissioner Jay Bradford told a legislative panel on Monday that the state won?t apply for the grant to plan for a health insurance exchange without the Legislature?s support. Friday is the application deadline.

The health care law created new marketplaces for insurance known as exchanges that will open for business in 2014. A bill authorizing Arkansas to set up its exchange stalled in the Legislature earlier this year.

The state House?s top Republican says Democratic Gov. Mike Beebe doesn?t need legislative support to apply for the grant. Bradford said Beebe wouldn?t go forward without lawmakers? backing.

(AP) ? Capping a campaign trip for his economic plan and his re-election, President Barack Obama on Tuesday tried to keep pressure on Congress to consider his nearly $450 billion jobs bill, saying it had been two weeks since he sent the bill to Capitol Hill "and now I want it back."

"I want it back, passed, so I can sign this bill and start putting people back to work," Obama said from Abraham Lincoln Hill School, a site chosen to emphasize the education elements of his bill.

The president tailored his comments to his audience, saying the school's science labs were built decades ago and schools around the country need updated facilities. Yet his broader speech was nearly identical to ones he has given around the country.

There has been no clear sign that his campaign for his bill is winning over Republicans in Congress whose support he needs.

Obama's spokesman, Jay Carney, told reporters the White House hopes members of Congress are hearing from their constituents about the need to act. Obama made that pitch himself to the audience of several thousand people, saying: "Every one of you can help make it happen by sending a message to Congress, a simple message: 'Pass this jobs bill.'

Obama's bill would spend about $25 billion to modernize public schools. The White House said Colorado's share could support up to 3,400 jobs.

Overall, his jobs plan is a mix of payroll tax cuts and spending that he says could be paid for by requiring wealthier individuals, families and companies to pay more.

The president's three-day trip out West included seven fundraisers in Washington state and California in advance of an important fundraising deadline.

With the economy stuck and unemployment high as the 2012 campaign heats up, Obama has been reminding supporters that he never told them governing would be easy.

His own chief political adviser, David Axelrod, underscored that reality Tuesday, when he cast the president's re-election bid as "a titanic struggle."

With the tough political landscape in mind, Obama has used his West Coast swing to get in some shots at the GOP presidential field.

"I urge all of you to watch some of these Republican debates. It's a different vision about who we are, who we stand for," Obama told a Hollywood fundraiser on Monday.

Republicans have panned Obama's West Coast swing, saying he has been more interested in saving his own job than creating new jobs for Americans. And Republican National Committee spokeswoman Kirsten Kukowski said Obama was "treating the West Coast as an ATM for his campaign coffers as he makes his way toward the first billion-dollar campaign."

Obama was flying back to Washington Tuesday night.

Scientists discover an organizing principle for our sense of smell based on pleasantness

ScienceDaily (Sep. 25, 2011) ? The fact that certain smells cause us pleasure or disgust would seem to be a matter of personal taste. But new research at the Weizmann Institute shows that odors can be rated on a scale of pleasantness, and this turns out to be an organizing principle for the way we experience smell. The findings, which appeared September 26 in Nature Neuroscience, reveal a correlation between the response of certain nerves to particular scents and the pleasantness of those scents. Based on this correlation, the researchers could tell by measuring the nerve responses whether a subject found a smell pleasant or unpleasant.

Our various sensory organs are have evolved patterns of organization that reflect the type of input they receive. Thus the receptors in the retina, in the back of the eye, are arranged spatially for efficiently mapping out visual coordinates. The structure of the inner ear, on the other hand, is set up according to a tonal scale. But the organizational principle for our sense of smell has remained a mystery: Scientists have not even been sure if there is a scale that determines the organization of our smell organ, much less how the arrangement of smell receptors on the membranes in our nasal passages might reflect such a scale.

A team headed by Prof. Noam Sobel of the Weizmann Institute's Neurobiology Department set out to search for the principle of organization for smell. Hints that the answer could be tied to pleasantness had been seen in research labs around the world, including that of Sobel, who had previously found a connection between the chemical structure of an odor molecule and its place on a pleasantness scale. Sobel and his team thought that smell receptors in the nose -- of which there are some 400 subtypes -- could be arranged on the nasal membrane according to this scale. This hypothesis goes against the conventional view, which claims that the various smell receptors are mixed -- distributed evenly, but randomly, around the membrane.

In the experiment, the researchers inserted electrodes into the nasal passages of volunteers and measured the nerves' responses to different smells in various sites. Each measurement actually captured the response of thousands of smell receptors, as these are densely packed on the membrane. The scientists found that the strength of the nerve signal varies from place to place on the membrane. It appeared that the receptors are not evenly distributed, but rather, that they are grouped into distinct sites, each engaging most strongly with a particular type of scent. Further investigation showed that the intensity of a reaction was linked to the odor's place on the pleasantness scale. A site where the nerves reacted strongly to a certain agreeable scent also showed strong reactions to other pleasing smells and vice versa: The nerves in an area with a high response to an unpleasant odor reacted similarly to other disagreeable smells. The implication is that a pleasantness scale is, indeed, an organizing principle for our smell organ.

But does our sense of smell really work according to this simple principle? Natural odors are composed of a large number of molecules -- roses, for instance, release 172 different odor molecules. Nonetheless, says Sobel, the most dominant of those determine which sites on the membrane will react the most strongly, while the other substances make secondary contributions to the scent.

'We uncovered a clear correlation between the pattern of nerve reaction to various smells and the pleasantness of those smells. As in sight and hearing, the receptors for our sense of smell are spatially organized in a way that reflects the nature of the sensory experience,' says Sobel. In addition, the findings confirm the idea that our experience of smells as nice or nasty is hardwired into our physiology, and not purely the result of individual preference. Sobel doesn't discount the idea that individuals may experience smells differently. He theorizes that cultural context and personal experience may cause a certain amount of reorganization in smell perception over a person's lifetime.

Copper film could lower touch screen, led and solar cell costs

ScienceDaily (Sep. 26, 2011) ? Copper nanowires may be coming to a little screen near you. These new nanostructures have the potential to drive down the costs of displaying information on cell phones, e-readers and iPads, and they could also help engineers build foldable electronics and improved solar cells, according to new research.

Duke chemist Ben Wiley and his graduate student have developed a technique to organize copper atoms in water to form long, thin, non-clumped nanowires. The nanowires are then transformed into transparent, conductive films and coated onto glass or plastic.

The new research shows that the copper nanowire films have the same properties as those currently used in electronic devices and solar cells, but are less expensive to manufacture. The results were published online Sept. 23 in Advanced Materials.

The films that currently connect pixels in electronic screens are made of indium tin oxide, or ITO. It is highly transparent, which transmits the information well. But the ITO film must be deposited from a vapor in a process that is a thousand times slower than newspaper printing, and, once the ITO is in the device, it cracks easily. Indium is also an expensive rare earth element, costing as much as $800 per kilogram.

These problems have driven worldwide efforts to find less expensive materials that can be coated or printed like ink at much faster speeds to make low-cost, transparent conducting films, Wiley said.

One alternative to an ITO film is to use inks containing silver nanowires. The first cell phone with a screen made from silver nanowires will be on the market this year. But silver, like indium, is still relatively expensive at $1400 per kilogram.

Copper, on the other hand, is a thousand times more abundant than indium or silver, and about 100 times less expensive, costing only $9 per kilogram.

In 2010, Wiley and his graduate student Aaron Rathmell showed that it was possible to form a layer of copper nanowires on glass to make a transparent conducting film.

But at that time, the performance of the film was not good enough for practical applications because the wires clumped together. The new way of growing the copper nanowires and coating them on glass surfaces eliminates the clumping problem, Wiley said.

He and Rathmell also created the new copper nanowires to maintain their conductivity and form when bent back and forth 1,000 times. In contrast, ITO films' conduction and structure break after a few bends.

Wiley said the low-cost, high-performance, and flexibility of copper nanowires make them a natural choice for use in the next generation of displays and solar cells. He co-founded a company called NanoForge Corp in 2010 to manufacture copper nanowires for commercial applications.

In early 2011, NanoForge received a $45,000 North Carolina IDEA grant for refinement and scale-up of the manufacturing process of copper nanowires, and it is now filling orders.

With continuing development, copper nanowires could be in screens and solar cells in the next few years, which could lead to lighter and more reliable displays and also to making solar energy more competitive with fossil fuels, Wiley said.

(AP) ? Vladimir Putin's decision to reclaim the presidency next year sets up the possibility that he could rule Russia until 2024 and foreshadows a continuation of the strongman rule that many in the West have called a retreat from democracy.

Although Putin departed the Kremlin in 2008 due to term limits and moved about two kilometers (1.5 miles) down the road to the prime minister's office, in a sense he never left at all. He cannily used Russia's state-controlled national TV channels to remain the country's pre-eminent political figure, with appearances portraying himself as a bold adventurer in Russia's wilderness, a vigorous advocate of the country's global importance and, occasionally, as a bit of a rogue consorting with scruffy motorcyclists.

His hand-picked successor as president, Dmitry Medvedev, appeared as little more than a tame youngster in comparison ? enthusing about Twitter and issuing earnest statements about the need for reforms, but achieving few tangible results.

"He didn't do anything important, and I'm pretty sure they didn't let him do anything," said Vyachelsav Mazurkov, who was spending a cool fall afternoon in a Moscow park soon after the congress of Russia's dominant political party approved Putin's candidacy. Although Medvedev had shown flashes of independence, particularly in denouncing the corruption that flourished during Putin's presidency, he was seen by many as simply a placeholder while Putin bided his time until he could legally return.

If he wins the March 4 election ? a near-certainty given his popularity and mastery of Russia's political system ? Putin will return to a presidency even more powerful than when he left. In 2012, the presidential term will be extended to six years from four; he would be eligible to serve two terms and just a few weeks shy of turning 59, the avid martial-arts fan's health appears robust.

In nominating Putin, his United Russia party also approved his proposal that Medvedev take over Putin's current role as prime minister, the No. 2 government position.

Putin's return to the presidency would be unlikely to ease Russia's dispute with the United States over the building of a European missile-defense system and other issues. Economic pressures, however, could push Putin to pursue reforms aimed at attracting more foreign investment, analysts said.

During his presidency, Putin ruled Russia with a steely command, bringing about a system known as "managed democracy" that saw opposition politicians all but eliminated from the national eye. His personal popularity aided his maneuvering. Many Russians view Putin as the strong, decisive figure needed by a sprawling country troubled by corruption, an Islamist insurgency and massive economic inequality.

The presidential election is preceded by national parliamentary elections on Dec. 4, in which United Russia will seek to retain its dominance; the party has 312 of the 450 seats in the current parliament. The period for formal submission of presidential candidates' names has not yet begun, and it is unclear who might choose to challenge Putin for president.

As president, Medvedev called for improvements in Russia's unreliable court system and for efforts against the country's endemic corruption. But his initiatives have produced little tangible result. Moving Medvedev to the premiership could set him up to take the brunt of criticism for austerity measures that Putin has warned will be necessary for Russia amid global economic turmoil.

Medvedev's advisers, likely to lose influence if he moves to the premiership, were clearly disappointed that he would not have another term in the Kremlin to try to continue pursuing reforms, and bristled at political maneuverings.

Medvedev's presidency held hopes for change, "but our political elite made a different decision and chose the path to so-called stability," Yevgeny Gontmakher of the Medvedev-established Institute for Contemporary Development think-tank said on Ekho Moskvy radio.

"This filthy deal of the country's supreme authorities is a blow to the institution of the presidency," Kremlin-connected analyst Gleb Pavlovsky told the radio station.

However, a spokesman for the powerful Russian Orthodox Church praised the move lavishly.

"This is a real example of goodness and morality in politics, an example that could be envied not only by our predecessors, people who lived in Soviet times, but citizens of the majority of countries in the world, including those who try to teach us," Father Vsevolod Chaplin was quoted as saying by the Interfax news agency.

Putin's return to the presidency would likely continue or even strengthen the "managed democracy" system he installed in his first stint as president. Under it, opposition parties face high obstacles to winning seats in parliament; of the four parties currently in parliament only the Communists, whose support is dwindling, act as a genuine opposition force.

Opposition groups' attempts to hold rallies are rarely approved by authorities and unsanctioned gatherings are quickly broken up by police. All major television channels are under state control and rarely present opposition views.

Under Medvedev, Russia's relations with the West have been less tense, even though there has been little change in Russia's domestic politics. The improved relations with Washington largely reflected President Barack Obama's "reset" initiative. It is unclear if Obama will win a second term next year to continue the policy with Putin in the Kremlin.

Despite Medvedev's statements of reformist intent, Russia remained under strong Western criticism. A report by the U.S.-based NGO Freedom House last year said "there has been a steady erosion of the content, if not the formal institutions, of Russian democracy."

In a visit to Russia in March, U.S. Vice President Joe Biden exhorted Russians: "Don't compromise on the basic elements of democracy. You need not make that Faustian bargain."

The U.S. also wants to put elements of a missile-defense system in Europe, saying it is needed to counter the threat of attack from rogue nations such as Iran. But Russia has disputed the need, saying the defense missiles could instead be aimed at it, a stance that is unlikely to change with Putin back at the presidency.

Putin started a carefully orchestrated series of maneuvers at Saturday's session of the party congress in a Moscow sports arena by proposing that Medvedev head the party list for the December elections. Medvedev then proposed that Putin be the party's presidential candidate, and Putin returned to the stage to accept the proposal and express support for Medvedev as prime minister.

On his return to the stage, he found the microphone had been turned off temporarily, but said with a smile "I will speak louder. My commander's voice has not yet been lost."

The congress approved the moves with no apparent opposition. Despite growing discontent among ordinary Russians with the party, United Russia exerts such an overwhelming presence in the country's politics that Putin's election and Medvedev's switch to the premiership are virtually ensured.

Many connect Putin with Russia's turnaround from post-Soviet poverty to prosperity, largely driven by high prices for Russia's vast supplies of oil and natural gas. But growing awareness of the need to move beyond a natural-resources economy could force Putin in a new term as president to pursue reforms, some analysts say.

"I expect Putin will establish a very pro-business and pro-reform Cabinet," said Chris Weafer, chief strategist of the Russian investment bank Troika Dialog.

Putin also proposed Saturday that Russia's richest citizens face higher taxes. The flat income tax that came into effect during Putin's 2000-2008 presidency has been widely praised as improving tax collection and Putin's proposal would not change that, but he called for increases in consumption and real estate taxes that hit the rich comparatively harder.

This gives then many decisions for various types of play. The height can be changed as required for games with the family so that each person has a chance to shoot. Hoops with an alterable height can be mobile or in-ground. The in-ground type works rather well for a hoop that's found in the front drive. They're also a good option for public basketball hoops that are found at parks. These basketball hoops are put in-ground and rooted in place by cement. These hoops start at heights of 5 feet and can shoot up to 10 feet.

The size of the backboard on the adjustable hoops can be different, too. The maximum backboard size is 42? x 72?. This is going to be too large for a ring in a home court primarily based on where the ring will be found. Also consider what kind of play there'll be and where you will mount the hoop when you select the backboard size. Many home ring backboards are acrylic with target lines for good shooting. Youngsters will learn techniques concerning how to shoot properly the simplest way at a low goal height

The recording would begin in Phinx's garage as she and several other people stood around a muscle car with it's hood open. After a second the audio would sync up and Phinx would begin to speak. She responded, "Yesterday you said, and I quote, 'Did anyone else ever notice that white people are always shooting up schools?' Remember that?"

"I remember that." A woman added, "That was when Mary here also said something about expecting the 'little A-Rab kids' to blow up the school." The woman said to the others, "Totally doesn't sound like me."

Moments later the video feed would end.

Biologists celebrate ferret comeback

As the cage door opened, black-footed ferret No. 7505 tentatively peeked his head out, looked hesitantly at the prairie dog burrow offered before him, and then rushed inside, disappearing beneath the earth of western South Dakota's badlands.

His freedom had been months in the making, but in less than a minute ? and three decades after his species was believed extinct ? he was gone, unleashed into the wild to do what the endangered ferret does best: attack and kill prairie dogs.

"Hopefully, he's chowing down on a prairie dog now," said Paul Marinari, a fish and wildlife biologist with the National Black-Footed Ferret Conservation Center.

The release was invitation-only event at the Badlands National Park, attended by about two dozen ferret fanatics, to kick off a weekend of nationwide festivities celebrating the 30th anniversary of the rediscovery of a mustelid once thought extinct.

On Sept. 26, 1981, a ranch dog in Meeteetse, Wyo., proudly presented his owners with a dead black-footed ferret. A local taxidermist identified the creature, which had been thought extinct for several years, launching a decades-long recovery effort that has seen the ferret population grow from 18 to more than 1,000 in the wild.

The ferret is still endangered, but conservationists are hopeful that by 2020, enough will be in the wild to wipe them off the list.

"We have a responsibility to restore a species that is very much a part of our North American heritage," said Kristy Bly, a wildlife biologist with the World Wildlife Fund. The recovery of the black-footed ferret ? called BFFs for short ? signifies the health of the grassland ecosystem, she added.

"We're committed to seeing this healthy, living prairie come back," Bly said.

The ferrets' decline is intertwined with the war waged on prairie dogs by farmers. Long considered farmland pests that compete with livestock for grass, prairie dogs have been hunted and poisoned en masse since the early 1900s.

The campaign worked. But as the prairie dogs disappeared, so, too, did their predators. Larry Haverfield, a cattle rancher in Logan County, Kan., said that loss wreaked havoc on the prairielands.

"Man poisons the prairie dogs, and that poison also kills some of the predators," he said. "You're shooting yourself in the foot."

Haverfield has allowed 7,000 of his 10,000-acre farm to host prairie dogs, irking his neighbors. In 2007, his land became one of just 19 recovery sites in the U.S., Canada and Mexico for the black-footed ferret, and 74 ferrets have since been released on his property.

They were born in captivity, then taken to 1,600-square-foot preconditioning pens where they're taught to hunt and feast on prairie dogs. The ferrets spend at least 30 days in the environment before they're released into designated reintroduction sites.

The recovery hasn't been without hiccups: Wildlife biologists had trouble at first mating the ferrets in captivity; they mate just once a year and have small litters of kits. Also, some swaths of the re-entry sites have been hit with canine distemper and the sylvatic plague, though newly introduced ferrets are vaccinated for both diseases.

Re-entry sites also are in Wyoming, South Dakota, Montana, Arizona, Colorado, Utah, Kansas and New Mexico. Several of the states have events scheduled throughout the weekend to celebrate the rediscovery's 30th anniversary, as do Illinois, Pennsylvania, Kentucky and Washington, D.C.

George and Kay Locatelli, of Fairfield, Calif., were giddy while meeting a captive ferret on display at the Ben Reifel Visitor Center in the Badlands National Park on Saturday morning. The ferret, named Mr. Brightside after a song by The Killers, curled up cutely in his aquarium for dozens of eager visitors.

"Hopefully, they're coming back for good," said Kay, 67.

Captive ferrets are given names; ones to be released into the wild are identified by number only, Marinari said.

To be considered officially un-endangered, the ferrets must have 10 separate populations of at least 10 acres with at least 1,500 breeding adults. Researchers are about one-third of the way there, said Bly, the wildlife biologist.

Just how to count the growing population is tricky, acknowledged Travis Livieri, executive director of Prairie Wildlife Research. Livieri works full time counting ferrets ? a job done at night with a 100-watt bulb mounted atop his truck. The light reflects green in the nocturnal ferrets' eyes.

"Sometimes it's like spotting a needle in a haystack," he said late Friday on a so-called spotlighting count in the Badlands National Park. "You can be out here all night and not see a thing."

Bly said this weekend's nationwide ferret festivities are much deserved. It's about more than bringing back a species, she said. It's about saving the prairies.

"It's one key step to recovering this prairie," she said. "We're celebrating huge strides in the recovery effort."
