T-Mobile LTE network now 'nationwide,' available in 233 metro areas

T-Mobile LTE

Carrier claims independent tests put its LTE network ahead of other carriers

Along with sweeping changes to its international calling and data rates, T-Mobile is also announcing news related to its LTE network here at home. Coming in ahead of schedule according to CTO Neville Ray, T-Mobile is announcing today that its LTE network is now truly "nationwide," covering 233 metro areas across the country (that's 200 million POPs according to the carrier).

That number of markets is just over double the 116 that were live according to T-Mobile as of July, marking a pretty dramatic increase in LTE coverage in just a handful of months. Now we all know there are far more than 233 metro areas in the U.S. to cover, but this quick expansion has us hopeful that T-Mobile will keep ahead of schedule and expand LTE further.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? As Iran's new president takes over, new U.S. penalties against the country appear a done deal.

In a letter to President Barack Obama, 76 senators are demanding tougher punishment on Iran's economy until the Islamic republic scales back its nuclear program. It also urges Obama to consider military options while keeping the door open to diplomacy.

The Senate letter, a copy of which was obtained Saturday by The Associated Press, comes just days after the House overwhelmingly passed new restrictions on Iran's oil sector and its mining and construction industries. Senators are expected to take up the same package in September.

"Until we see a significant slowdown of Iran's nuclear activities, we believe our nation must toughen sanctions and reinforce the credibility of our option to use military force at the same time as we fully explore a diplomatic solution to our dispute with Iran," says the letter, which will be delivered Monday.

The Obama administration is concerned Congress' effort could undercut Iran's relatively moderate President-elect Hasan Rouhani, who was formally endorsed by Iran's ayatollah on Saturday and takes the oath of office Sunday. Rouhani has pledged to follow a "path of moderation" and promised greater openness over Iran's nuclear program.

Obama wants to give Rouhani a chance to prove his seriousness.

The U.S. believes Iran has been working for years to develop nuclear weapons. Iran insists its program is for peaceful energy and research purposes.

Rouhani's victory signaled Iran's clear dissatisfaction, the senators said. But they noted that all final decisions on nuclear matters rest with Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and said Iran must not be allowed to use any new nuclear negotiations with world powers to stall for time.

"Iran today continues its large-scale installation of advanced centrifuges," their letter said. "This will soon put it in the position to be able to rapidly produce weapons-grade uranium, bringing Tehran to the brink of a nuclear weapons capability."

"We need to understand quickly whether Tehran is at last ready to negotiate seriously," it added. "Iran needs to understand that the time for diplomacy is nearing its end."

Obama prefers diplomacy. He has given Iran until sometime next spring to prove to the world that its program is peaceful.

If Iran fails to do so, the stage may be set for military intervention from the U.S. or Israel, which sees Iranian nuclear weapons capacity as an existential threat and has warned of taking action according to its own timeline.

'2 Guns' blasts past 'Smurfs 2' at box office

Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg in "2 Guns."

Mark Wahlberg and Denzel Washington's R-rated action pic "2 Guns" easily won the North American box office race with a solid $27.4 million, while Sony's "The Smurfs 2" limped to a third-place finish as Hollywood overcrowds the box office with family films.

"Smurfs 2" took in $18.2 million for the weekend for a disappointing five-day debut of $27.3 million, compared to the $35.6 million opening of "The Smurfs" in late July 2011. Sony is banking on the sequel to make up ground overseas; rolling out in 42 markets this weekend, the CGI/live-action pic took in $52.5 million for a worldwide total of $80.3 million.

Dampened by a heat wave in Europe, the sequel's international debut was 4 percent behind the 2011 film but still did impressive business. It opened No. 1 in the U.K. ($5.1 million) and No. 2 in France ($4.2 million). In Russia, the pic took in $5.4 million, a third bigger than the original "Smurfs." Latin America ponied up a $18 million, led by Brazil ($4.7 million) and Mexico ($4.3 million). A worldwide gross of $500 million isn't out of the question, based on these numbers, according to one insider.

STORY: Fall's prestige movie pileup is Hollywood's new box office problem

"Smurfs 2," placing No. 3 domestically behind "2 Guns" and holdover "The Wolverine," is problematic for Sony as the studio continues to fend off shareholder activist Daniel Loeb.

"The Wolverine," coming in No. 2 in its second weekend for 20th Century Fox, took in $21.7 million for a North American total of $95 million. The Hugh Jackman superhero pic, continuing to do big business overseas, grew its foreign total to $160.2 million for a worldwide cume of $255.2 million.

From Icelandic director Baltasar Kormakur, "2 Guns" was fueled by an ethnically diverse audience, with African-Americans making up 28 percent of the audience and Hispanics, 14 percent. Interestingly, women made up 49 percent of the audience, while 77 percent of those buying tickets were over the age of 25. The numbers suggest that older couples turned out in force to watch Wahlberg and Washington pair up for the first time on the big screen.

"We're very happy to have the No. 1 opening in North America for the seventh time this year," said Universal president of domestic distribution Nikki Rocco. "I think the chemistry between Washington and Wahlberg was a big draw. Adults really enjoyed the film."

The action pic, earning a B+ CinemaScore and infused with a heavy dose of humor, cost between $80 million and $90 million to produce, although the net budget was $61 million after tax incentives. Emmett/Furla Films and Foresight Unlimited financed and produced the film, with Foresight Unlimited handling international rights. The film project generated huge interest among foreign distributors, with Sony Worldwide Acquisitions Group buying rights to much of the world.

"2 Guns" revolves around a DEA agent (Washington) and Naval Intelligence officer (Wahlberg) who must work together after they are set up by the CIA. Wahlberg and Kormakur first worked together on action pic Contraband, which debuted to $24.3 million in January 2012.

"Smurfs 2," scoring an A- CinemaScore, is a victim of too many family films. Opening two weeks ago, DreamWorks Animation's "Turbo" has also underperformed as it opened in the wake of Universals' megahit "Despicable Me 2."

"It's a bit of a bummer how it performed here, but it's set to do big business on the world stage. To be at $80 million-plus at this point with many major markets yet to go, including China, we are in a great position," Sony president of worldwide distribution Rory Bruer. "It will hugely successful for the studio."

The first "Smurfs" grossed north of $420.4 million internationally, representing 75 percent of the world total of $561.3 million.

"Despicable 2," now in its fourth weekend, continues to stay high up on the box office chart, grossing $10.4 million over the weekend to place No. 5 and pushing its domestic total to $326.7 million. Overseas, the animated tentpole has now earned $387 million for a worldwide total of $713.7 million.

"Turbo" placed No. 7 in North America for a domestic total of $69.5 million

Hollywood has never opened so many family films in a single summer. This season boasts "Epic," "Monsters University," "Despicable 2," "Turbo," "Smurfs 2" and "Planes," which hits theaters in two weeks (there's also the "Percy Jackson" sequel, though that will skew older).

Based on the comic book series created by the Belgian artist Peyo, "Smurfs 2" is the second title in a planned trilogy ("The Smurfs 3" is set for summer 2015). The sequel sees all of the main cast returning, with Neil Patrick Harris and Hank Azaria reprising their live-action roles. Jonathan Winters, who died this spring, and Katy Perry lead the voice cast, while Raja Gosnell returns to the director's chair.

STORY: Low-budget horror rules summer box office ?

At the specialty box office, Lindsay Lohan's erotic thriller "The Canyons" failed to make much of a dent, grossing a meek $15,200 at the IFC Center in New York City. However, the pic was a strong draw on VOD, according to IFC Films, which is distributing the film domestically. Canyons was directed by Paul Schrader and written by Bret Easton Ellis.

A24 Films' dramedy "The Spectacular Now" enjoyed a strong start as it launched in four theaters in New York and Los Angeles, grossing $200,181 for a location average of $50,295. Directed by James Ponsoldt, The dramedy headlines Shailene Woodley, Miles Teller and Mary Elizabeth Winstead.

Woody Allen's "Blue Jasmine" was a big winner has it expanded into a total of 50 locations, grossing $1.9 million for a location average of $40,441 and cume of $3 million. The Sony Pictures Classics film, starring Cate Blanchett, is outperforming Allen's "Midnight in Paris."

(AP) ? "2 Guns" is No. 1 at the weekend box office.

The Universal action film starring Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg pulled the trigger to capture the top spot with $27.4 million, according to studio estimates Sunday.

"2 Guns" is based on a graphic novel of the same name and features Washington as a DEA agent and Wahlberg as a Naval Intelligence officer who must team up for an undercover operation involving drug traffickers and the CIA.

Nikki Rocco, head of distribution for Universal, said "2 Guns" opened at the studio's expectations and attributed the film's success to Icelandic director Baltasar Kormakur and the first-time pairing of Washington and Wahlberg.

"It was super casting," she said. "There was remarkable chemistry. The two of them work so well together. You see it on screen. Baltasar really gave them the energy to be able to do what they did in this film."

Fox's Japan-set superhero flick "The Wolverine" starring Hugh Jackman as the clawed warrior scratched out the No. 2 spot with $21.7 million in its second weekend, bringing the Marvel icon's total domestic haul to $95 million.

"The Smurfs 2" launched in the No. 3 position with $18.2 million. While Sony's kid-friendly computer-generated sequel based on the blue-hued cartoon franchise debuted below expectations in North America, "Smurfs 2" earned $52.5 million in 43 international markets.

"It is one of those films that seems to resonate on every continent," said Rory Bruer, Sony's president of worldwide distribution. "We have about 36 big territories to go, including China. They love the blue ones."

The Warner Bros. haunted house tale "The Conjuring" crossed the $100 million mark at No. 4 after exorcising $13.7 million in its third weekend.

Elsewhere at the box office, Sundance Film Festival favorite "The Spectacular Now" starring Miles Teller and Shailene Woodley earned $190,000 in four theaters in its debut weekend, while "The Canyons" made just $16,000 at two theaters, though "Canyons" distributor IFC Films said the erotic thriller starring Lindsay Lohan is performing strongly through video-on-demand services.

Other smaller films continued to perform solidly at the box office, including Sundance winner "Fruitvale Station" with $2.7 million in 1,086 theaters and director Woody Allen's "Blue Jasmine" with $2 million in 50 theaters.

"Summer is not just about blockbusters," said Paul Dergarabedian of box-office tracker Hollywood.com. "It's also about Woody Allen. It's about specialized films that challenge the audience ? or are just different from the traditional, cookie-cutter, summer-style movie."

Overall ticket sales this weekend were up more than 15 percent over the same weekend last summer, Dergarabedian said.

Spectator loses leg after controlled implosion of California power plant: police

Autumn Parry / The Bakersfield Californian viAP

An explosion knocks down one of the remaining towers at the old Kern Power Plant, Saturday, Aug. 3, 2013 in Bakersfield, Calif.

By Tracy Jarrett, NBC News

A spectator lost his leg while watching the implosion of a decommissioned PG&E plant Saturday morning and at least four more people were injured, authorities said.

The 44-year-old man, whose name has yet to be released, was gathered along with about 1,000 other spectators to watch the planned demolition of the Pacific Gas and Electric plant in Bakersfield, Calif., the Associated Press reported.

The man lost one leg and received major injuries to the other after shrapnel from the plant explosion flew across the street and struck his lower body, police said. An officer heard the man screaming for help after several plant structures came down, police told the AP.

The man, "sustained an apparent complete amputation of one leg, and the possible amputation of the second," Bakersfield Police Lt. Scott Tunnicliffe told NBC News affiliate KGET.

In California, authorities investigated what went wrong at the demolition of a decommissioned power plant Saturday. Hundreds had gathered around what was deemed a safe area but proved to be dangerous. NBC's Miguel Almaguer reports.

At least two other people received minor injuries that were treated on the scene, according to Tunnicliffe.

Those injured were part of a crowd gathered in a Lowe?s parking lot to watch the demolition that brought down the four-story plant decommissioned in 1986. Thousands of others lined the Rosedale Highway to watch the explosions, KGET reported.

There was a parameter set up around the plant, according to Tunnicliffe. However, according to KGET, PG&E stressed that no official accommodations were made for the general public to watch the explosions.

PG&E did not immediately respond to requests for comment from NBC News.

Roadways around the scene were reopened on Saturday, Tunnicliffe said.

Will Spectra Energy Earnings Flow Faster?

Spectra Energy (NYSE: SE??) will release its quarterly report on Tuesday, and investors have sent the company's stock to all-time highs. But the big question facing would-be shareholders is whether Spectra Energy earnings will reflect the long-term growth potential in the energy transmission industry.

Spectra has a sizable network of natural-gas pipeline and storage facilities throughout the U.S. and Canada, and it has used that network to tap into opportunities from rising levels of gas production. Having endured extremely low nat-gas prices that led many exploration and production companies to cut back on their nat-gas activity, Spectra now hopes that a rebound in natural gas will produce the opposite effect and boost its own profits. Let's take an early look at what's been happening with Spectra Energy over the past quarter and what we're likely to see in its quarterly report.

Will Spectra Energy earnings power up this quarter?
In recent months, analysts have gotten a bit more optimistic about the long-term prospects for Spectra Energy earnings, keeping June-quarter estimates steady but raising full-year 2013 projections by a penny per share and 2014 estimates by $0.03 per share. The stock has responded favorably, rising more than 16% since the end of April.

Lately, all the rage among midstream companies has involved creating master limited partnerships to hold assets in a tax-favored way that encourages greater income distributions for investors. Spectra bolstered its own case on that score back in May, moving a 50% interest in its Express-Platte pipeline system into its Spectra Energy Partners (NYSE: SEP??) MLP. The pipeline connects western Canadian crude oil to refiners in the U.S. Rocky Mountain region and the Midwest, which has been an increasing important network in light of production from Alberta's oil sands and other promising areas. Spectra followed up that announcement in June with plans to move all of its transmission and storage assets to Spectra Energy Partners, and investors cheered the expected rise in distributions from their shares.

But Spectra has also made some substantive strategic moves as well. Less than a week ago, Spectra said that it would partner with NextEra Energy (NYSE: NEE??) to help build a major natural gas pipeline to bring more gas to Florida. The move will mark the state's third big pipeline, but with current networks running near capacity, the venture should help NextEra promote growth in Florida and take advantage of high demand from gas-fired electricity plants in the state.

Another promising area for Spectra is the Utica Shale. With its being part of a joint proposal for a pipeline from the Ohio play to Detroit and then on to Canada, Spectra and partners Enbridge (NYSE: ENB??) and DTE Energy could end up reaping greater rewards as producers ramp up natural-gas volumes in the rapidly growing region.

In the Spectra earnings report, watch to see what long-term effect the company believes its asset transfers to Spectra Energy Partners will have on distributions to shareholders. With a 3.3% yield already for Spectra and distributions of 4.5% for the MLP, Spectra investors could be in a much happier mood if the company foresees much greater payouts ahead.

Robin Yount hopes baseball puts PEDs in rearview mirror

Hall of Famer Robin Yount was at Miller Park on Friday to commemorate the 20th anniversary of his retirement with the Milwaukee Brewers.

Naturally, The Kid was asked about Ryan Braun and his suspension for a failed test for performance-enhancing drugs.

"In Ryan's case I don't know all the facts but what I will say hopefully all of this that has gone on is just a bump in the road for baseball," Yount said. "I hope this will put an end to this once and for all. I hope the guys who are testing the system realize they can't beat it and let everybody go out there on an even playing field.

"It's very important to baseball that we get rid of this. It's not what we want to focus on as an industry. We want to focus on the game itself. This will pass. There are no players bigger than the game. It's not our brightest moment, but maybe this will make the guys aware they can't beat the system and we won't have to worry about it anymore."

In an interview with the Journal Sentinel during the height of the steroid scandal several years ago, Yount said he would have been tempted to use during his playing days, when they were not illegal and there was no drug test.

"It's just not necessary anymore with drug testing in place," Yount said. "I'm no expert on it, but I would certainly like to believe it's a good enough program where you can't get away with it.

"There was an argument before drug testing that you had to do it to keep up. But I'd like to believe those days are gone. I hope this puts an end to it."

Yount, 57, who played 20 years with the Brewers and later came back as a bench coach, was asked if he felt the hurt the city has experienced with Braun.

"I'm sure," he said. "Let's face it. An organization without your star player gets hurt in a lot of ways. It's just unfortunate. The way I see it, it becomes a very selfish attitude is what I think you end up finding here. If these guys would realize there's more to it than themselves... they're hurting their teammates, they're hurting the fans they play for because they're paying your salary."

Yount, who also coached with Arizona, said he has no interest getting back in the game because the commitment takes too much time from the other things in life important to him.

Ramirez closer: Third baseman Aramis Ramirez, who has been on the disabled list since July 7 with left knee tendinitis, is getting closer to returning to the Brewers lineup.

"He ran and took BP again (Friday)," manager Ron Roenicke said. "It's hard to predict when he'll be back, but he's getting closer to it. He feels better all the time and he's anxious to get back in the lineup. I know that."

Roenicke was asked about the next steps for Ramirez.

"It's really about the pain," he said. "It's thepatella tendon that's bothering him. It's the first step and trying to stop after he's running. Anytime you put a load on that tendon it's sore. But that's getting better all the time. Hopefully he's getting to the point where he doesn't have pain anymore."

Estrada update: Right-hander Marco Estrada, who has been on the DL since June 5 with a hamstring pull, is scheduled to get one more rehab start after Friday.

By Thursday, the Brewers should know if he is ready to rejoin the team or stay in Arizona for more work.

Roenicke was not ready to say that Estrada would go back into the rotation when he returns.

"I think first we need to get him pitching well," he said. "We filled in OK with the starters we have, but I want him to pitch well. He knows it's important for him to finish out the season."

Lucroy back behind the plate: After making his MLB debut at first base Wednesday night at Chicago, catcher Jonathan Lucroy was back behind the plate against the Nationals.

"The real reason Luc was at first base (Wednesday) was that he came into my office," Roenicke said. "He knows he hits Edwin Jackson well. (Wily) Peralta was pitching that day and (Lucroy)knew 'Maldy' (Martin Maldonado) was going to catch. He wanted in the lineup, which was great."

Lucroy committed an error that did not hurt the Brewers in the 6-1 loss.

"I think he did OK at first," Roenicke said. "I was fine with him. I don't know how much he'll be there. I think we'll only get him there when it's a matchup. If there's a pitcher he hits really well and we need him in the lineup, we'll do it. Most of the time, we'll have him back there catching."

Part of the problem is that Juan Francisco, who was back at first Friday night, is struggling offensively and defensively.

"Francisco, hopefully he continues to get better offensively," Roenicke said. "The first base part is a lot of confidence. When he dropped a couple of balls, now it's in his mind.

"We need him to relax a little bit and become more confident in what he does. He's got good hands. He shouldn't have that problem. When you make a mistake, mentally it gets to you."

Honeymoon?s over for wedding film

The 37-year-old Londoner, who shot to fame when he wrote and starred in the gritty urban hit Adulthood, said the crowded field had knocked the chances of his own wedding movie, The Knot, which is out on DVD.

?It was really the first film of about four on the subject to be made but the last one to come out. I felt the reaction to The Knot was rather tired,? he said.

Clarke co-wrote the story of soulmates whose wedding day is beset by disaster, and acted in it alongside Talulah Riley and Mena Suvari.

Some critics blamed the writing and direction for the film failing to take off, but he said: ?We tried to do something that was balanced for women and men though probably a little bit more into the laddish humour. We weren?t trying to re-invent the wheel.

?I just wanted to do something that was lighthearted and fun and make people smile and go? ?aah?. But it?s a really funny film and definitely girls could get a lot of romance out of it. It?s my wife?s favourite of all my films.?

Wedding films of the past two years have included Bridesmaids, A Few Best Men, Love, Wedding, Marriage and The Wedding Video with Robert Webb. This week sees the release of I Give It A Year with Rafe Spall.

Clarke, who won the rising star Bafta at the 2009 awards, is now filming an SAS action thriller I Am Soldier. He said he simply wanted to entertain people but there was little respect for this in the industry. He has a directing project in the spring will be seen in Star Trek Into Darkness and an animation, Saving Santa, at Christmas.

WWII colonel risked life with squad ? Business Management Daily ...

In November 1942, Col. Curtis LeMay delivered a briefing to his World War II bomber pilots. He told them they would fly directly toward the target, maximizing the risk of German anti-aircraft fire.

?You could hear a moan go through the room,? recalled Mike Kruge, 94, one of the last surviving members of that bomber group.

But as LeMay explained the nature of the mission?and why it was necessary to fly straight in (rather than take a safer zigzag approach)?the pilots began to believe they could do it. They grew even more excited when LeMay revealed that he would fly the lead bomber.

The pilots knew the Germans would target the lead bomber above all. Their leader?s willingness to make himself a focal point for enemy fire inspired the squadron.

LeMay (1906-1990) routinely in?sisted on flying the lead bomber on critical missions, even after he was promoted to brigadier general in 1943. He figured his life was less important than beating the enemy.

Throughout his career, LeMay succeeded thanks to his actions more than his personality. Associates did not find him warm or empathetic. But they admired him.

Despite his gruff exterior, he maintained a soft spot for his family. He wrote a letter to his wife every night during the war, even when he worked almost round the clock.

Audience and Marketer Insights on Digital Advertising [Infographic ...

Looking for marketing advice to add some leverage to your online advertising campaigns? Check out the IDG Knowledge Hub?s infographic displaying the benefits of utilizing more ?native? style ads in your advertising campaigns instead of traditional, banner style advertising.

Internet advertising is a constantly changing business, and in order to remain successful within that progressive business, those pursuing internet advertising careers should open their eyes up to the substantial benefits of utilizing ?native? ads instead of standard, banner-style ads.

Banner ads are your standard, stereotypical ads that show up at the top and bottom of webpages, almost completely out of context with whatever webpage you are visiting, that blandly attempt to draw viewers to whatever it is they are advertising. Although banner ads have proven to be successful in the past, we live in a very progressive, changing culture, with a very strong, youthful presence, who gets fed up with traditional, banner style ads.

With that being said, native ads offer webpage viewers a fresh alternative to advertising. Native ads are embedded within a webpage?s content, and are somewhat related to a webpage?s content. Additionally, native ads are more straightforward about their purpose as ads, unlike banner ads, that force their way onto a webpage just because their company ?paid? to have their ad on a website.

In conclusion, native ads are the closest thing advertising can get to honesty, which in our modern-day culture is hard to come by, and greatly appreciated.

Sean Parker's over-the-top wedding: Photos published in Vanity Fair

Vanity Fair has published photos from Sean Parker's "Lord of the Rings"-themed wedding, and it turns out the ridiculously lavish affair was even more over the top than we thought.

Yes, there were costumes for all 364 guests, custom-made by the costume designer who won an Academy Award for "Lord of the Rings." There were also faux bridges, a six-tier flower-adorned cake, a ruined stone castle, two broken Roman columns and a pen of bunnies "for anyone who needed a cuddle."

PHOTOS: Six things rich tech execs splurge on

The Napster co-founder and former Facebook president wed singer-songwriter Alexandra Lenas on June 1 in a campground in Big Sur during an event that reportedly cost $10 million. (Parker has disputed that figure, although he admitted it cost $4.5 million alone just to build the extravagant set for the wedding; then there was the $2.5-million fine he had to pay for not having a permit to build in a redwood grove).?

The Vanity Fair spread showed several wedding guests in their costumes, among them Twitter founder Jack Dorsey; "Girls" star Allison Williams; and actress Olivia Munn cradling an all-white bunny. Facebook co-founders Dustin Moskovitz and Chris Hughes, Sting, Sean Lennon and Gavin Newsom also attended. Mark Zuckerberg, who got married recently in a toned-down affair, was invited but sent his regrets.

Other details gleaned from the photos: Guests were treated to an elaborate feast that included pigs roasting on spits; a lounge area that featured ornate beds draped with what appear to be bearskin blankets; and dining chairs adorned with white furry seat covers.

According to Vanity Fair, Parker and his 24-year-old bride envisioned the wedding as a "performance art project." And, oh, there was performing all right: For the first dance, the groom serenaded the bride with "Part of Your World," from "The Little Mermaid." Can you hear us cringing?

Parker's nuptials caused quite the outrage this summer and was slammed by many as a prime example of Silicon Valley excess.

Without a permit, the couple trucked in plants and flowers, dug an artificial pond and erected a stone bridge and elevated dance floor amid the old-growth forest, raising the ire of conservationists and leading to the hefty fine.

A few weeks after the wedding, Parker wrote a nearly 10,000-word blog post on Tech Crunch in which he blasted the media and others for their criticism of the wedding.

"These reactions were so extreme, so maniacal, so deeply drenched in expletives, they seemed wasted on us; this was the sort of angry invective normally reserved for genocidal dictators," he wrote. "But nothing is sacred on the Internet, not even a wedding."

Smartphone cradle, app detect toxins, bacteria

URBANA, Ill. (AP) ? Afraid there may be peanuts or other allergens hiding in that cookie? Thanks to a cradle and app that turn your smartphone into a handheld biosensor, you may soon be able to run on-the-spot tests for food safety, environmental toxins, medical diagnostics and more.

The handheld biosensor was developed by researchers at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. A series of lenses and filters in the cradle mirror those found in larger, more expensive laboratory devices. Together, the cradle and app transform a smartphone into a tool that can detect toxins and bacteria, spot water contamination and identify allergens in food.

Kenny Long, a graduate researcher at the university, says the team was able to make the smartphone even smarter with modifications to the cellphone camera.

Sexuality Changes after Childbirth ? for Both Partners - Psych Central

By Rick Nauert PhD Senior News Editor
Reviewed by John M. Grohol, Psy.D. on August 1, 2013

Sexuality Changes after Childbirth ? for Both Partners Childbirth is a landmark event for a relationship, a joyous occasion that is a life changer for all parties.

While considerable research has explored parental life changes after a baby ? be it sleeping, dining, social life, or exercise ? one area of life adjustment seldom addressed is sexuality.

A new study explores the issue and finds that childbirth affects both partners? sexual health, although in a manner perhaps unexpected.

Investigators discovered partners of new mothers often experience shifts in sexuality, and these shifts are often unrelated to biological or medical factors pertaining to childbirth.

The findings, which are published The Journal of Sexual Medicine, expand current understanding of postpartum sexuality, and may help health professionals as they counsel new parents.

Research on postpartum sexuality has typically focused on female reproductive biology in birth mothers ? for example, how hormonal changes that accompany pregnancy, birth, and breastfeeding affect sexual desire, or how birth-related interventions affect sexual activity.

Few studies have looked at sexuality in the partners of postpartum women, even though it may be important for postpartum women?s perceptions of their own sexuality.

Sari van Anders, Ph.D., of the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, and her colleagues designed a study to examine postpartum sexuality as a social and relational process, focusing on co-parents.

A total of 114 partners (95 men, 18 women, 1 unspecified) of postpartum women completed an online questionnaire about their sexuality during the three months following their youngest child?s birth.

Attention was paid to physical, social, psychological, and relational experiences.

The researchers found that partners experience shifts in sexuality, just as birth mothers do. The changes that they experienced were linked to relational and social processes, not just biological or medical factors.

In fact, low desire in partners was largely influenced by factors related to caring for a new baby ? such as fatigue and stress ? rather than by factors related to the birth and/or birth mother, as more typically presumed.

?Our findings help to clarify how co-parents experience sexuality in myriad ways that are contextualized within partner and parenting relationships,? said?van Anders. ?What is of note is that we have come to recognize that sexual health of one partner may be related to the sexual health of the other, no matter the cause of the change in sexuality.?

In raging Middle East, Israel wins time with Palestinian peace talks

Jerusalem: Pressured by Washington, worried about its international standing and perturbed by Middle East turmoil, Israel had many reasons to return to peace talks with the Palestinians this week after a three year hiatus.

On the surface, Israelis saw little reason to jump back into negotiations. The status quo in the occupied Palestinian territories was holding and the question of the so-called peace process had largely fallen off the domestic political agenda.

But Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu may have realised he could not take the rap for cold shouldering US efforts to revive the talks, and recognised that turbulent regional dynamics made it worthwhile to engage with the Palestinians once more.

In raging Middle East, Israel wins time with Palestinian peace talks

In the three years since the last failed effort, the Arab world has been turned upside down by uprisings that have transformed the Middle East.

"Resuming the diplomatic process at this time is important for the state of Israel both in order to try to end the conflict and given the complex reality in our region, especially the security challenges from Syria and Iran," Netanyahu told his cabinet on Sunday before it sanctioned the resumption of talks.

The last round of U.S.-brokered negotiations collapsed barely after they began in 2010 in a row over continued Jewish settlement building in the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem on land the Palestinians want for their future state.

Although Netanyahu continues to reject Palestinian demands that he halt the construction, he has agreed to release 104 Arab prisoners as a goodwill gesture, drawing heavy criticism from rightist allies who say it will encourage terrorism.

The fact he made such a politically sensitive concession suggests he was put under enormous pressure by U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry, who visited the region six times in just five months to try to revive the long-moribund peace process.

"No one wanted to lose the blame game, so that's why we went to Washington," said Amos Yadlin, a former Israeli military intelligence chief who now heads the Institute for National Security Studies.

The same is true for Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, and that pressure could also produce progress: "Whoever botches the Americans' plans will have a price to pay," one Israeli official told Reuters on condition of anonymity.

CHAOS

However, US arm-twisting alone does not fully explain Netanyahu's decision to head back to the negotiating table. Turmoil in the region also played an important role.

In the three years since the last failed effort, the Arab world has been turned upside down by uprisings that have transformed the Middle East.

With the outcome of the rebellion still unclear, notably in neighbouring Syria and Egypt, many Israeli politicians have urged Netanyahu to do nothing and wait for the storm to pass, which appeared to be his preferred strategy until now.

But Itamar Rabinovich, a former Israeli ambassador to Washington, said the prime minister could not pretend that Israel was not a part of the Middle East and had to try to bring some calm and order to the chaos.

"Middle East instability has a complex, contradictory role. It is more difficult to make territorial concessions, but on the other hand, in a region that is undergoing such significant changes, Israel wants to be a player," he said.

"To do that it has to negotiate with the Palestinians."

Since the onset of the Arab world's popular revolts in late 2010, uncertainty has become almost the only thing Israel can rely on, bringing it short-term gains and long-term concerns.

Israel signed a peace treaty with Egypt three decades ago and had maintained a stable cold war with Syria for even longer, but the turmoil has hit both those big Arab nations hard.

Although Israeli officials have kept quiet about the latest upheavals in Egypt, there is no doubt they are relieved to see the return to prominence of the army in Cairo and the downfall of Islamist President Mohamed Mursi - which in turn undermines Israel's enemy Hamas, the militant group that rules Gaza.

Likewise the civil war in Syria means Israel has been able to sit back and watch the erosion of a once powerful foe.

However, the chaos has also allowed jihadi gunmen to build a presence along two previously dormant fronts and has sowed seeds of potential trouble in Jordan, the only Arab state to have signed a peace accord with Israel besides Egypt.

Against this backdrop, Yossi Beilin, an Israeli architect of the 1993 Oslo Accords with the Palestinians, said the time was right to try to end the decades-old Palestinian conflict.

"When around us you see all these crises, we might create with the Palestinians and the Jordanians and hopefully in the future with the Egyptians a group of peaceful countries which understand the importance of peace and cooperation and have an impact on the whole region," Beilin said.

IRAN

European Union diplomats have echoed this sentiment, and the 28-nation-bloc added to the pressure on Netanyahu to return to talks by announcing this month that it would bar financial aid to Israeli groups operating in the occupied territories - putting Israel on guard that its patience was running out.

"In the past few months the price of continuing the status quo has become much clearer to Netanyahu and in his third term he may be thinking of his legacy," said the former ambassador and peace negotiator Rabinovich.

When it comes to establishing a legacy, Netanyahu's allies say his primary focus has always been tackling Iran's atomic programme. As he himself told his cabinet on Sunday, worries over Iran played directly into his Palestinian decision-making.

The Israeli leader has said for years that Iran is planning to build a nuclear bomb and warned that this represents an existential threat to the Jewish state.

Despite Tehran's denials, Netanyahu believes time is running out to deal with the issue. Israeli leaders have repeatedly said Washington must take the lead in halting Iran - either through military means, economic sanctions or diplomacy.

In this context, analysts said Israel could not risk rousing Washington's ire by spurning Kerry's extraordinary efforts.

"Netanyahu has Iran on his horizon and has made a very calculated move in order to guarantee some American support on more concrete, assertive steps in the Iranian matter," said Uzi Rabi, head of the Moshe Dayan Centre for Middle East Studies.

Zimbabwe poll "seriously compromised" - ZESN monitors

HARARE (Reuters) - Zimbabwe's leading domestic election monitoring agency cried foul on Thursday over this week's poll, saying the credibility of the vote was "seriously compromised" by irregularities on polling day.

Officials from the Zimbabwe Election Support Network (ZESN) said urban voters, who mainly favour Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai, had been turned away from polling stations in their thousands.

Conversely, only a small number had been prevented from voting in the countryside, where President Robert Mugabe has most support, ZESN officials told a news conference.

Facebook Will Sell 15-Second Video Ads For $2.5 ... - Business Insider

mark zuckerberg facebook

Reuters

CEO Mark Zuckerberg

?

Bloomberg reports that Facebook will sell 15 second long television-style ads, that will appear on its site, for as much as $2.5 million a day. By comparison, 30-second ads on the Super Bowl tend to go for $3.5 million.

Fifteen seconds is the same length as an Instagram video.

The video ad feature a big bet for Facebook. Apple, for instance, once attempted to charge $1 million for an ad in its iAd mobile system but was forced to gradually draw down the price when clients balked.

Facebook is attempting to capture the advertising dollars that marketers often allocate to television spending. In fact, as early as last October, COO Sheryl Sandberg told investors during an earnings call that advertising on Facebook was superior to doing so on TV.?

Advertisers spent up to f $3.8 million on a 30-second television commercial during the Super Bowl in 2013. And?108.4 million people tuned in to watch the big game.

Facebook, on the other hand, has the attention of 1.15 billion users. "And it happens every day,"?Sandberg said.??

Bloomberg reports:

"The commercials will initially be sold on a full-day basis and can only be targeted to users based on age and gender, according to the people. Facebook members won?t see a spot more than three times in a given day, the people said. Depending on how large an audience an advertiser plans to reach, the ads will range in price from $1 million to about $2.5 million a day, according to [Bloomberg's sources]."

Rumors of the video ad have been circulating since last year. In December, Ad Age reported that executives expected the spots, which would supposedly run on "autoplay," to appear "by April at the latest."

CEO Mark Zuckerberg did?not discuss the ads during Facebook's Q2 earnings call last week. Sandberg specifically said she had no news to report on that issue, also.

Sandberg did note during the conference call, however, "Every night, 88 million to 100 million people are actively using Facebook during prime-time TV hours in the United States alone.??

Sources?previously told Business Insider that Facebook has already been reaching out to ad agencies about the product.

"I've talked to some sources who have been pitched directly from Facebook at agencies," Rob Jewell, CEO of Spruce Media, told BI.?"Agencies also seem really excited about it. I think it's because the problem with online video buying today is that there's really no reach. You can't get that TV-like reach online, and I think that's what has held up those TV dollars from going online. You have to piece it together from lots of video sites with 5 or 10 million users here and there. The size [of Facebook] ?is appealing to agencies."
