PERU, Ill. (AP) ? A fire at a massive former clock factory that police say was deliberately lit provided an eerie backdrop for a northern Illinois city's New Year's celebrations, and despite the efforts of firefighters from throughout the area, the city landmark was destroyed.
The blaze at the former Westclox Co. clock complex, which covers a two-by-four-block span of downtown Peru, began around the time people were counting down the last seconds of 2011, Gary Eccles, an engineer with the city's fire department, told The Associated Press. By 11 a.m. Sunday, the fire was burning itself out but had destroyed the building and caused it to cave in on itself, he said.
Karen Torri, a local resident, told the (LaSalle) News Tribune that she was at party and was startled when she looked out the window.
"Just as we were kissing, I looked out the window and saw the fireworks, but it wasn't fireworks; it was fire engines," she said.
The only reported injury from the blaze was to a firefighter who was rushed to a hospital for emergency knee surgery, Eccles said.
Police Chief Doug Bernabei said at a news conference Sunday that two teenage boys, a 15-year-old from Peru and a 17-year-old from La Salle, were charged with aggravated arson. The older teen, who's being charged as an adult, appeared in court Sunday and a judge set his bond at $250,000, according to the News Tribune.
LaSalle County State's Attorney Brian Towne said the two teens entered the building, poured gas from a can they found there onto a boat stored inside, set it on fire and then left, the newspaper reported. Towne said a tip that an anonymous caller gave Peru police led officers to the two suspects.
The fire, which caused propane tanks to explode, prompted a mandatory evacuation of homes near the complex. But Eccles said that by 11 a.m., nearly everyone was allowed to return home. Those who weren't were being kept out because the smoke from the fire was blowing directly at their homes.
Dana Slawter, who recently moved to Peru from Philadelphia, said she had just returned home from a party when she was told to leave. She said she had just begun learning the factory's history and that it would be sad if it went up in smoke.
"It's upsetting," Slawter, cradling her Chihuahua, Cinnamon, told the News Tribune.
The building, a landmark in the city that once housed Westclox Co.'s clock and watch-making operations decades ago, currently houses several small businesses, including a salon, a photo business, a lab and others, the newspaper reported.
Westclox built 44 structures at the complex from 1910 until 1956, then closed in 1980. A group of investors bought the building and sold it to developers in 2006, who said they planned to convert it into a retail and convention center while maintaining its history integrity.
The National Park Service in 2007 deemed the building eligible for the National Registry of Historic Places "because of its significant contributions to the social and economic development of Peru and the nation," the newspaper reported.

According to its Q4 earnings, Apple raked in $28 billion revenue and $6.6 billion profit. And even though the iPhone 4S sports the same design as its predecessor, Apple sold 4 million handsets in its first weekend.
Michael Gartenberg, an analyst for Gartner, stressed that Apple?s continued success will rely on delivering a compelling user experience. ?Ecosystems are important. Consumers are looking at things like services, applications, cloud functions, synchronizations.?
This is where Apple has excelled, thanks to iCloud and Siri.
Details are scant, but the iPad 3 is expected to feature a class-leading 2048 x 1536-pixel display, double the iPad 2?s resolution. Also, look for a new 4G chip from Qualcomm for those models with integrated mobile broadband.
Meanwhile, rumors point to the iPhone 5 having a larger screen, multiple color options, and a 10-megapixel camera. We also wouldn?t be surprised to see a quad-core processor.
Due to the company?s secrecy about new products, it?s almost impossible to paint an accurate picture of Apple?s future. However, Jackson expects a change in design during the next year. ?The iPhone is due for a design overhaul,? he said. He also acknowledged the possibility of a voice-controlled iTV, saying there was great potential to be found in Siri.
Now, Apple?s task is to continue out-innovating the competition, especially since Amazon has started to encroach on Apple?s turf with its ecosystem-centric Kindle Fire.
Gartenberg wouldn?t share any predictions, but he?emphasized that Apple will continue to forge its own unique path. ?The market said that the lack of Flash was a weakness for iOS devices and Apple said, ?We don?t think it is.? Then we saw Adobe abandon [its] mobile Flash efforts. People said Apple needed to build netbooks, and the company said it didn?t. It sort of ignores conventional wisdom.?

Coach of the Year - Kirk Tavener, Interlake girls soccer
Leaving a school after back-to-back state tournament appearances is never an easy call, but Kirk Tavener knew it was the right one to make.
He was rewarded when his Saints topped Cedarcrest 1-0 for the 2A state title.
After leading the Lindbergh girls on consecutive trips to the 3A girls soccer state tournament, the first trip to state for the school in nearly a decade, Tavener had an opportunity to come back to Interlake, where he had previously spent time with the boys and girls programs.
Before 2011, Interlake had not captured a state championship in a team sport since John Olderud led the Saints to a 4A baseball crown in 1986.
But this time around, the job required far more than basic Xs and Os.
With an infusion of talent in the form of club soccer standout Isabel Farrell, coach Kirk Tavener returned to Interlake this year and led his team all the way to the trophy, besting Cedarcrest at Shoreline Stadium 1-0.
Interlake had a quartet of elite-level club soccer players at the school, but none of the four had ever turned out for the prep team until this year. That group included 2011 conference MVP Isabel Farrell and three others with national and high level club experience.
Rather than allowing animosity over the newcomers develop, Tavener established a family atmosphere around the team and got all of his players to buy-in to the notion that they could have success with a blend of new and old.

Word got out that Arnold Schwarzengger would follow up his supporting stint in The Expendables 2 and his comeback starring role in The Last Stand with a leading turn in another action-thriller: Black Sands, a new project directed by onetime stunt supervisors Mike McCoy and Scott Waugh (the upcoming Act of Valor) based on a screenplay by The A-Team writer Skip Woods.
The film was then being described as a Commando-style flick that would pit a loner (Schwarzenegger) against a vicious weapons manufacturer; now, the project (which has not?been retitled Black Sunday, despite reports to the contrary)?is said to be more of a genre mashup.
Arnold Fans has the scoop on Black Sands, which will reportedly star Ah-nuld as an immortal warrior (he describes his character as ?kind of an angel?) who battles the aforementioned criminal and his heavily-armed thugs. Principal photography on the project is slated to begin on location in Belen, New Mexico on April 1st, 2012, with a mid/late 2013 release date most likely in mind.Some of Schwarzenegger?s best blockbuster titles have managed to successfully blend sci-fi and action movie tropes (ex. Predator, Total Recall, Terminator 2: Judgement Day, etc.). However, things didn?t turn out so impressively the last time Schwarzenegger appeared in a movie that crossed a straight-forward thriller with supernatural elements, ie. the 1999 critical dud End of Days.
Everyone is currently waiting to see if Schwarzenegger still has what it takes to convincingly play a badass onscreen and carry the bulk of a movie ? as The Last Stand will (theoretically) prove to be true. The creative talents attached to Black Sands know how to construct an entertaining popcorn flick, but that won?t matter so much if the film?s leading man isn?t still up to the task of playing the hero?

San Diego? U.S. troops are increasingly using an easy-to-get herbal mix called "Spice," which mimics a marijuana high, is hard to detect and can bring on hallucinations that last for days.
The abuse of the substance has so alarmed military officials that they've launched an aggressive testing program that this year has led to the investigation of more than 1,100 suspected users.
So-called "synthetic" pot is readily available on the Internet and has become popular nationwide in recent years, but its use among troops and sailors has raised concerns among the Pentagon brass.
"You can just imagine the work that we do in a military environment," said Mark Ridley, deputy director of the Naval Criminal Investigative Service. "You need to be in your right mind when you do a job. That's why the Navy has always taken a zero tolerance policy toward drugs."
Two years ago, only 29 Marines and sailors were investigated for Spice. This year, the number topped 700, the investigative service said. Those found guilty of using Spice are kicked out, although the Navy does not track the overall number of dismissals.
The Air Force has punished 497 airmen so far this year, compared to last year's 380, according to Pentagon figures. The Army does not track Spice investigations but says it has medically treated 119 soldiers for the synthetic drug in total.
Military officials emphasize those caught represent a tiny fraction of all service members and note none was in a leadership position or believed high while on duty.
Spice is made up of exotic plants from Asia like Blue Lotus and Bay Bean. Their leaves are coated with chemicals that mimic the effects of THC, the active ingredient in marijuana, but are five to 200 times more potent.
More than 40 states have banned some of its chemicals, prompting sellers to turn to the Internet, where it is marketed as incense or potpourri. In some states, Spice is sold at bars, smoke shops and convenience stores.
Sellers based in the United States and Europe advertising the incense on the Internet could not be contacted for comment.
The packets often say the ingredients are not for human consumption and are for aromatherapy. They are described as "mood enhancing" and "long lasting." Some of the sellers' Web sites say they do not sell herbal mixes containing any illegal chemicals and say they are offering a "legal high."
Service members preferred it because up until this year there was no way to detect it with urine tests.
Manufacturers are adapting to avoid detection, even on the new tests, and skirt new laws banning the main chemicals.
"It's a moving target," said Capt. J.A. "Cappy" Surette, spokesman for the Navy Bureau of Medicine and Surgery.
The military can calibrate its equipment to test for those five banned chemicals "but underground chemists can keep altering the properties and make up to more than 100 permutations," Surette said.
Lt. Commander Donald Hurst, a fourth-year psychiatry resident at San Diego's Naval Medical Center, said the hospital is believed to have seen more cases than any other health facility in the country.
Doctors saw users experiencing bad reactions once a month, but now see them weekly. Users suffer everything from vomiting, elevated blood pressure and seizures to extreme agitation, anxiety and delusions.
Hurst said the behavior in many cases he witnessed at first seemed akin to schizophrenia. Usually within minutes, however, the person became completely lucid. Sometimes, the person goes in and out of such episodes for days.

WEST DES MOINES, Iowa--Chris Christie came to Iowa on Friday, not as a 2012 presidential candidate, as many Republicans in the state had hoped, but as Mitt Romney's most high-profile surrogate in the final days before Tuesday's first-in-the-nation caucuses.
More than 100 people turned out before daylight in the parking lot of a Hy-Vee supermarket, standing for more than an hour in high winds and a steady drizzle to see Romney and Christie, the governor of New Jersey.
Dressed in a pinstripe navy blue suit, Christie was greeted like a celebrity by the bundled-up masses, some of whom rushed outside to see the governor after taking refuge inside their cars against the harsh winter morning.
Christie bluntly put forth what has become Romney's main talking point: That President Obama has failed to deliver on the hope and change he promised as a candidate four years ago.
"The president is going to try to convince you somehow that he deserves to be rehired," Christie said. "Well let's be real clear, real clear: President Barack Obama came out to Iowa three years ago, and he talked to you about hope and change. Well let me tell ya, after three years of Obama, we're hopeless and changeless, and we need Mitt Romney to bring us back, to bring America back."
Playing off his persona as a New Jersey tough guy, Christie issued a mock warning.
"New Jersey's watching you ? We're watching you real closely," he said. "And I want to tell you something. I want to tell you something really clearly. I'm in a good mood this morning. I'm feeling happy and upbeat. I'm happy to be with Mitt and Ann. But let me tell ya, if you people disappoint me Tuesday, if you don't do what you're supposed to do on Tuesday for Mitt Romney. I will be back, Jersey-style."
Afterward, as Christie moved through the crowd toward Romney's bus, a man called out, "I wish it were you!" Christie smiled, but did not respond.
Christie, who was elected in 2009, long insisted he wouldn't seek the presidency but briefly entertained the idea in the fall after several Republicans?including a group of top party operatives in Iowa?urged him to reconsider. But in October he again ruled out a run and endorsed Romney.
Christie is hitting the road with Romney's wife, Ann, on Friday for several events in Iowa, as Romney travels to New Hampshire for a handful of campaign events. Romney is set to be back in Iowa on Saturday night and has planned 10 events around the state in the closing hours before Tuesday's caucuses.
