Will Spectra Energy Earnings Flow Faster?

Spectra Energy (NYSE: SE??) will release its quarterly report on Tuesday, and investors have sent the company's stock to all-time highs. But the big question facing would-be shareholders is whether Spectra Energy earnings will reflect the long-term growth potential in the energy transmission industry.

Spectra has a sizable network of natural-gas pipeline and storage facilities throughout the U.S. and Canada, and it has used that network to tap into opportunities from rising levels of gas production. Having endured extremely low nat-gas prices that led many exploration and production companies to cut back on their nat-gas activity, Spectra now hopes that a rebound in natural gas will produce the opposite effect and boost its own profits. Let's take an early look at what's been happening with Spectra Energy over the past quarter and what we're likely to see in its quarterly report.

Will Spectra Energy earnings power up this quarter?
In recent months, analysts have gotten a bit more optimistic about the long-term prospects for Spectra Energy earnings, keeping June-quarter estimates steady but raising full-year 2013 projections by a penny per share and 2014 estimates by $0.03 per share. The stock has responded favorably, rising more than 16% since the end of April.

Lately, all the rage among midstream companies has involved creating master limited partnerships to hold assets in a tax-favored way that encourages greater income distributions for investors. Spectra bolstered its own case on that score back in May, moving a 50% interest in its Express-Platte pipeline system into its Spectra Energy Partners (NYSE: SEP??) MLP. The pipeline connects western Canadian crude oil to refiners in the U.S. Rocky Mountain region and the Midwest, which has been an increasing important network in light of production from Alberta's oil sands and other promising areas. Spectra followed up that announcement in June with plans to move all of its transmission and storage assets to Spectra Energy Partners, and investors cheered the expected rise in distributions from their shares.

But Spectra has also made some substantive strategic moves as well. Less than a week ago, Spectra said that it would partner with NextEra Energy (NYSE: NEE??) to help build a major natural gas pipeline to bring more gas to Florida. The move will mark the state's third big pipeline, but with current networks running near capacity, the venture should help NextEra promote growth in Florida and take advantage of high demand from gas-fired electricity plants in the state.

Another promising area for Spectra is the Utica Shale. With its being part of a joint proposal for a pipeline from the Ohio play to Detroit and then on to Canada, Spectra and partners Enbridge (NYSE: ENB??) and DTE Energy could end up reaping greater rewards as producers ramp up natural-gas volumes in the rapidly growing region.

In the Spectra earnings report, watch to see what long-term effect the company believes its asset transfers to Spectra Energy Partners will have on distributions to shareholders. With a 3.3% yield already for Spectra and distributions of 4.5% for the MLP, Spectra investors could be in a much happier mood if the company foresees much greater payouts ahead.

Robin Yount hopes baseball puts PEDs in rearview mirror

Hall of Famer Robin Yount was at Miller Park on Friday to commemorate the 20th anniversary of his retirement with the Milwaukee Brewers.

Naturally, The Kid was asked about Ryan Braun and his suspension for a failed test for performance-enhancing drugs.

"In Ryan's case I don't know all the facts but what I will say hopefully all of this that has gone on is just a bump in the road for baseball," Yount said. "I hope this will put an end to this once and for all. I hope the guys who are testing the system realize they can't beat it and let everybody go out there on an even playing field.

"It's very important to baseball that we get rid of this. It's not what we want to focus on as an industry. We want to focus on the game itself. This will pass. There are no players bigger than the game. It's not our brightest moment, but maybe this will make the guys aware they can't beat the system and we won't have to worry about it anymore."

In an interview with the Journal Sentinel during the height of the steroid scandal several years ago, Yount said he would have been tempted to use during his playing days, when they were not illegal and there was no drug test.

"It's just not necessary anymore with drug testing in place," Yount said. "I'm no expert on it, but I would certainly like to believe it's a good enough program where you can't get away with it.

"There was an argument before drug testing that you had to do it to keep up. But I'd like to believe those days are gone. I hope this puts an end to it."

Yount, 57, who played 20 years with the Brewers and later came back as a bench coach, was asked if he felt the hurt the city has experienced with Braun.

"I'm sure," he said. "Let's face it. An organization without your star player gets hurt in a lot of ways. It's just unfortunate. The way I see it, it becomes a very selfish attitude is what I think you end up finding here. If these guys would realize there's more to it than themselves... they're hurting their teammates, they're hurting the fans they play for because they're paying your salary."

Yount, who also coached with Arizona, said he has no interest getting back in the game because the commitment takes too much time from the other things in life important to him.

Ramirez closer: Third baseman Aramis Ramirez, who has been on the disabled list since July 7 with left knee tendinitis, is getting closer to returning to the Brewers lineup.

"He ran and took BP again (Friday)," manager Ron Roenicke said. "It's hard to predict when he'll be back, but he's getting closer to it. He feels better all the time and he's anxious to get back in the lineup. I know that."

Roenicke was asked about the next steps for Ramirez.

"It's really about the pain," he said. "It's thepatella tendon that's bothering him. It's the first step and trying to stop after he's running. Anytime you put a load on that tendon it's sore. But that's getting better all the time. Hopefully he's getting to the point where he doesn't have pain anymore."

Estrada update: Right-hander Marco Estrada, who has been on the DL since June 5 with a hamstring pull, is scheduled to get one more rehab start after Friday.

By Thursday, the Brewers should know if he is ready to rejoin the team or stay in Arizona for more work.

Roenicke was not ready to say that Estrada would go back into the rotation when he returns.

"I think first we need to get him pitching well," he said. "We filled in OK with the starters we have, but I want him to pitch well. He knows it's important for him to finish out the season."

Lucroy back behind the plate: After making his MLB debut at first base Wednesday night at Chicago, catcher Jonathan Lucroy was back behind the plate against the Nationals.

"The real reason Luc was at first base (Wednesday) was that he came into my office," Roenicke said. "He knows he hits Edwin Jackson well. (Wily) Peralta was pitching that day and (Lucroy)knew 'Maldy' (Martin Maldonado) was going to catch. He wanted in the lineup, which was great."

Lucroy committed an error that did not hurt the Brewers in the 6-1 loss.

"I think he did OK at first," Roenicke said. "I was fine with him. I don't know how much he'll be there. I think we'll only get him there when it's a matchup. If there's a pitcher he hits really well and we need him in the lineup, we'll do it. Most of the time, we'll have him back there catching."

Part of the problem is that Juan Francisco, who was back at first Friday night, is struggling offensively and defensively.

"Francisco, hopefully he continues to get better offensively," Roenicke said. "The first base part is a lot of confidence. When he dropped a couple of balls, now it's in his mind.

"We need him to relax a little bit and become more confident in what he does. He's got good hands. He shouldn't have that problem. When you make a mistake, mentally it gets to you."

Honeymoon?s over for wedding film

The 37-year-old Londoner, who shot to fame when he wrote and starred in the gritty urban hit Adulthood, said the crowded field had knocked the chances of his own wedding movie, The Knot, which is out on DVD.

?It was really the first film of about four on the subject to be made but the last one to come out. I felt the reaction to The Knot was rather tired,? he said.

Clarke co-wrote the story of soulmates whose wedding day is beset by disaster, and acted in it alongside Talulah Riley and Mena Suvari.

Some critics blamed the writing and direction for the film failing to take off, but he said: ?We tried to do something that was balanced for women and men though probably a little bit more into the laddish humour. We weren?t trying to re-invent the wheel.

?I just wanted to do something that was lighthearted and fun and make people smile and go? ?aah?. But it?s a really funny film and definitely girls could get a lot of romance out of it. It?s my wife?s favourite of all my films.?

Wedding films of the past two years have included Bridesmaids, A Few Best Men, Love, Wedding, Marriage and The Wedding Video with Robert Webb. This week sees the release of I Give It A Year with Rafe Spall.

Clarke, who won the rising star Bafta at the 2009 awards, is now filming an SAS action thriller I Am Soldier. He said he simply wanted to entertain people but there was little respect for this in the industry. He has a directing project in the spring will be seen in Star Trek Into Darkness and an animation, Saving Santa, at Christmas.

In November 1942, Col. Curtis LeMay delivered a briefing to his World War II bomber pilots. He told them they would fly directly toward the target, maximizing the risk of German anti-aircraft fire.

?You could hear a moan go through the room,? recalled Mike Kruge, 94, one of the last surviving members of that bomber group.

But as LeMay explained the nature of the mission?and why it was necessary to fly straight in (rather than take a safer zigzag approach)?the pilots began to believe they could do it. They grew even more excited when LeMay revealed that he would fly the lead bomber.

The pilots knew the Germans would target the lead bomber above all. Their leader?s willingness to make himself a focal point for enemy fire inspired the squadron.

LeMay (1906-1990) routinely in?sisted on flying the lead bomber on critical missions, even after he was promoted to brigadier general in 1943. He figured his life was less important than beating the enemy.

Throughout his career, LeMay succeeded thanks to his actions more than his personality. Associates did not find him warm or empathetic. But they admired him.

Despite his gruff exterior, he maintained a soft spot for his family. He wrote a letter to his wife every night during the war, even when he worked almost round the clock.
