In the medieval German town of Aachen, people begin acting strangely.? They start dancing wildly and, according to eyewitnesses, ?a convulsion infuriated the human frame? as ?people join hands, dance, leap, scream and shake for hours.? Many appear to ?see visions? and keep dancing until they collapse from exhaustion, their feet bloody and bruised. Some actually die from heart attacks or strokes.? The frenzy?which becomes known as ?St. John?s Dance? because it?s believed that St. John might be causing it?spreads to other towns, including Cologne, Flanders, Metz, Strasbourg, and Utrecht and lasts off and on for months. Among the ?cures? attempted are prayers to St. John, exorcisms on those dancing, and asking musicians to play along with the dancers, then slow down with the hope that the dancers follow suit.? Centuries later, scientists say the most likely of several explanations for the bizarre behavior is mass hysteria related to stress. Earlier that year, horrible flooding had devastated the region.
